Question : POS Herters 25-06 that feeds like a 24' foot windrow of koshia weed into a 410 massy combine. The bolt has a fixed extractor so if it misses the groove in the brass the bolt won't close resulting in the cartridge stuck in the chamber. Is there a cure ?

DO NOT USE HERTERS RIFLE ROUNDS. The Herters ammo I've seen is "Tula" Russian ammo repackaged. I've seen it blow up 2 different .308 rifles on the internets due to double charges from the factory. I'm a proponent of using cheap import ammo and even I won't touch the stuff anymore. Their .223 ammo is the only stuff I've ever had problems with in my AR. Tula AK ammo isn't any better.

3. Your bolt came out of your rifle just fine, but, now it won't fully close. It'll go in past the bolt stop but stops just shy of being able to run the bolt fully forward and turn the bolt down into the firing position.

What happened?

In this case, the bolt became uncocked. This can happen easily in some rifles and is almost impossible with others.

No biggie to fix, just need to turn the tail section clockwise 1/4 turn.

I will offer notch is for holding firing pin in place when working on the bolt. Some use a ten cent tool for this.

Sarcasm aside, I like this thread. I am used to tearing down shotguns, but not so much rifles. General cleanings. Don't really shoot enough or do mods to my rifles. Good info :crazythumb:

Very interesting SDMF. The first time my bolt on the Browning A Bolt rotated it took me a few minutes to understand the problem. Problems with new guns is what drives me nuts. I bought a Remington one time and the chamber reamer must have had a chip. It made it past their quality control. Even factory ammo would get cut in half. The chipped reamer left a ridge in the chamber thin and high enough to cut the brass with the breach pressure. The new Savage model 10 BA Stealth I bought had lands that looked like a railroad track the milling marks were so deep. It would not shoot subsonics with any accuracy. First round would be 1060fps and by the time I got to the fifth round it was under 500fps. I didn't dare shoot another for fear of it lodging in the barrel. I sent it in and it came back with a very good barrel.
Reassembling my Ruger 45/22 always drives me nuts. ------- well it did, but I sold it for a newer model with the light barrel, and threaded muzzle.

I can usually get by pretty well taking apart and putting back together assuming I do both actions myself and I do them fairly close together. That said, Ruger semi-auto 22 pistols and Browning BPS shotguns are the devil. Those 2 get the gun-scrubber and air-hose only treatment.

hmm -- i just have normal stuff like brass stuck in firing pin from rifle hand loaded hot one. Working on the sob out in the middle of the baddlands with no equipment - just your knife.

And then with the scatter gun - dropping it in the slough - - the old pull the trigger and then have the firing pin not let loose for what seems like minutes (you learned at age 14 dont point it anywhere or eject eject eject) ha. i remember those days --- how about how many of you would get the reloads wet (water creeping in the waders or what all) and then shoot and it would make that punt noise. The noise you knew the wad didnt make it of the barrel and the bbs you could see hit the water in front of you 15 feet or so. Then you would look at your buddy and go oh sht --- dont have any thing to poke it out. shift in the next one fire. dem were the good ole days.

Pretty sure I still have some primers from Sioux Sporting Goods along with an 8# keg of Win 760 powder thats 30+ yrs old.

Looks like you're trying to make a 30-06 outta that 308.

That'll piss ya off. I recall one season there was primer feeding trouble with the PW progressive press being used to load shotgun ammo. A little lubricating spray every 100 rounds or so cleared up the problem. However whatever spray was used also caused some primers to lose much of their potency. I recall being probably not really old enough to use the words I was using in front of my father every time those shells cost me a bird and/or worse yet, caused me to have to make an essentially unarmed walk back to the vehicle to take the bbl off and use the radio antenna to push the wad out. GRRRRRRRRR!

Is there an age limit on powder, pretty sure all my shotgun powder is over 20 years old? I have 3 boxes of shells with asterics on them that I was loading Red Dot and refilled the powder bottle with Blue Dot. Still not sure if I should shoot them, disassemble, or throw them away.

As long as it's been in a climate controlled area it should be fine. You'll smell it right away if it's not right. I still dip out of my 30+yr old can of 760.

Disassemble the mixed powder loads. Shot is $40/bag.
