I wonder what happened to people back in the day before modern medicine, like 1800's eary 1900's ? can you die from a kidney stone? or does pressure just keep building till it comes shooting out?

I think I had some smaller ones, came to the conclusion that taking an Iron supplement was the culprit.

Thank God I've never had one, it sounds HORRIBLE. Here a couple things google told me.

Avoid stone-forming foods:
Beets
,
chocolate
,
spinach
,
rhubarb
,
tea
, and most
nuts
are rich in
oxalate
, and
colas
are rich in phosphate, both of which can contribute to kidney stones.
Diet and supplements How to prevent kidney stones naturally

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking more water is the best way to prevent kidney stones. ...
  • Eat more calcium-rich foods. ...
  • Eat less sodium. ...
  • Eat fewer oxalate-rich foods. ...
  • Eat less animal protein. ...
  • Avoid vitamin C supplements. ...
  • Explore herbal remedies.

As I have gotten older my body has started to produce too much uric acid. So I take a pill a day to keep that reduced. Hopefully that will help with the stone building but I also have to limit my salt intake and vitamin C. I can't even drink more than a glass of orange juice anymore or I get gout which is also real fun to deal with. Getting old sucks and I am only 46. What is that saying - Much to young to feel this damn old.

Had twice and does hurt. Told diet.

But the doc put a tube up my penis the last time so it would drain out. Bad deal for a week and did not need it.

When the nurse yank it out (yes yank it out as my feet where up in the stirups, came out fast) there was blood all over the place and the pain was just as bad. So good luck to those that are looking forward to removing the tube. db

Had kidney stones twice, neither resulted in surgery (fortunately). Second time I literally crawled into the Minot emergency room and the nurse asks what's wrong. In a weepy, child-like voice I murmured maybe my appendix burst? Maybe Lucifer himself had invaded my bowels? What else could cause such pain?. Upon her request I point to the source of the overwhelming discomfort (my lower abdomen). She giggles and educates me that my appendix is in a different location. Further, statistically unlikely that I've had a rendezvous with the evil, red fellow. She explains I have a kidney stone (s) and they'll get me fixed up. A CAT scan confirms her on-the-fly diagnosis, but not before a needle loaded with something put me in la-la land. The same nurse told me she had three children and one kidney stone. She'd have three more kids before enduring another stone. My self-esteem was repaired for a short spell. I whizzed out that little rock a few days later, but not before damn near passing out and forgetting who and where I was for a few minutes.

The ER doctor was old-school, told me to start drinking 4-8 ounces of orange juice, grape juice or any other fruit juice with higher acidic content every day. This would help break down and flush certain chemicals known to accumulate in the kidneys (most notably calcium). That was 10+ years ago and I've not had the problem since.

I think Bill Engval could do a good monolog on this subject.

Sticker shock. Doctors and hospital billed insurance 26,000 so far and I go in on Monday to get stone broke up and taken out. Thank God for good insurance, all three of them.

Is it true that drinking a lot of Budweiser can prevent stones from developing??

i am willing to find out

I've been doing a home study on this for about 15+ years and so far haven't developed a stone. A few more years stone free and I should have enough data to get something published in the AMA journal.

Kidney stones are yet another example of benefits of cutting back on pop intake.

Allopurinol. I started with 100 mg per day. The day of my next Dr. appointment I had another gout attack. Have been taking 300 mg for several years. I'll need to take it for the rest of my life. Some people just make too much uric acid.
