with regards to cancel of school -- america has became fat and lazy. Everything is bussed or some parent is pushing them selves to school to drop off the kid. They will do 50 in a 15mph zone because they got out of bed late and its just push push push push. I had kids I know the feeling - however if you push to hard and miss something -- i seen a kid hit by a car just outside my house -- kid was on a bike and he flew 8 10 feet. Slow down. We have better clothing now then ever for cold weather. I had what my 800 fill on this am - i didnt feel a damn bit of cold. Go ahead take your days off -- you will be out of PTO and then whining when you cant go fishing.

Even with snow cover- got to make some serious ice when the air temp is -30. Almost time to get the auger extensions out.

Our school has policy on temps: -20 actual or -40 chill shuts it down.

Heck when we were young our school didn't shut down for much or so it seemed. I do remember one bad winter where we had like 5 storm days. We had to go to school on 2 Saturdays to make up for 2 of those storm days. Now that really sucked!

Not sure about 75 years ago but:
In the fifties my older sisters would stay in town with an aunt during the winter in order to go to school. That was due to snow and roads.
For me I do not remember every spending a winter in town but went to school by the family car and maybe I guess a horse or two in a enclosed wagon with a coal stove inside (can not remember what they were call). A lot times dad would just drive across the fields as the roads where block with snow. And there where no 4x4 for us back then. It was the family car. A 49 olds would go through anything with a shovel, steel at that(but one time I remember a bunch of crawler tractors came out to open the roads).

I am sure the temp were just as cold back then. I do remember in the early 70s working for a rancher and feeding cattle two days in a roll when it was the high -40 below but no wind (his two kids went to school that day). Old Oliver 88 and 46 IHC KB5 both started those mornings to feed with.
But by high school for me the school had closed down and I began riding a bus and in those days the heaters where worthless.

But do not remember once not going to school due to cold but a time or two due to a snow storm. Guess better to be safe than sorry but it has changed (it was a bitch getting out of bed to drive to work this morning).
Last Saturday night I passed a greyhound school bus going about 15 MPH on a rural hwy. About 20 miles down the road I met another greyhound school bus from the same school going towards the first bus. Nice to have that communication for help now days. DB

Whatever i havent even been out this January --- Ahab sees a guy on FB having fun and then he tells everybody i am out whoopin it up everyday. I put money on it - i bet my liver has seen less booze then about 95% of the the members on this web site.

Back to the school thing --- Everybody is getting soft -- all they do is point fingers --- i read the facebook school mom 1500 posts after the gov said it would be up to the schools. They were out for blood-little johhny is not going to school!!!! to cold. Fact is little johnny is wearing tennis shoes (his dad bought him the best boots at scheels that money could buy - but he didnt want to wear them cus they are "cool") and little johnny is wearing a thin little coat and he has ankle high socks. Little Johnnies mom whines to her boss she wants more PTO.

Even the fish laugh -- they look up a hole to a ice castle and say look at dem soft americans. Although i bet a guy out with castle would burn up some major propane.

Weather Bucket says it’s too cold for the kids to go to school. Apparently.

Short:
You got me on the drinking as just because it's January does not mean I not able to still buy the old mill and drink it plus I have a fair stock of it sitting in the unheated garage.

And why do I drink in January.
Well because I can, I enjoy it, its available and it helps create a memory or two like last Saturday night at the memorial building in Devils Lake. If you were there I was the one that got up on the stage during the music to act stupidly (with a little encouragement from my lady of close to 50 years). db

I was at NDSU grad school in the late 80s. It was as bad as this and lasted for weeks.

Walking to T-lot in the dark after a long day in the lab, only to find the ol Bronco wouldn't start on occasion, really sucked balls. Probably the coldest I ever felt in my life.

Today's modern vehicles (and heated garages) are a miracle for which I am very thankful!

Thank God we have global warming or it would get REALLY cold!

Yes, haha, I was trying to explain this to my kids this morning. Temp was -13 in Bismarck.

They're saying possibly 32 below tonight. coldest actual temp in Bismarck in 5 years.

Yeah it's cold outside it is still better then a 3+ day snow storm with 6+ feet snow drifts to shovel out of. In August of 2018 williston had a temperature of 106 degrees and this morning it was -32 degrees.

wow, that's a huge swing. People on the coasts have no idea.

Nothing better on a cold Jan day, when its slower than crap here at work, I'm getting a good laugh reading these posts.
Time sure do change when it comes to school and winter, remember back in the 70's 8th grade, it was storming out, it was about 6 block walk to school (lakota nd) I had asked my mom to give us a ride to school...what did she say??? you got it....start walking its not that bad, Im not driving you to school lol. Kids nowadays would report that has child abuse.....
Aww the good ole days of winter....
