Looks like they have been struggling, fcking the farmer I doubt it. As much as some of you are on the internet please do us all a favor - do your fucking research and provide facts!

Tyson claimed they lost 500 million on their beef business last year and this is the answer. NDbowman summed it up well. Those who sold a month ago are the lucky ones. Those who are selling now are still better off than a year ago but it’s still a kick in the nuts.

I buy direct from a rancher and it’s the best beef and price I can find. Go local/direct if you can.

We also buy direct from rancher and have processed. Great quality at significantly lower cost.

And, since there was a 40% tariff on beef from Brazil, one of the US's go to for imports that is why prices are soaring...5 days ago Trump realized this and cut the tariff to 0...tariffs don't work!
Really they didnt already know that the u.s is by far the biggest consumer of beef?

Tariffs tariffs tariffs have always been passed down to the consumer. It's not about the US supply as we export most of our beef and most of our beef we get in the US is imported, that's a fact. This is just about anything the US has IE oil, lumber, grain, precious metals...all exported to countries that can utilize these materials to build products at a cheaper price and then the US imports the final result. So when a tariff is put into effect, the manufacturer pays the price and thus is passed down to the consumer. Hope y'all getting ready to be poor because it is a trickle down effect that takes months but beef isn't the only thing. Since we export less grain than we import due to these tariffs there will soon be an insolvent market for farmers. Isn't Trump just awesome, we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg on this, we are all going to be screwed financially soon!
That's kinda off most beef is imported? Why is it like this? Um bottom line is costs are rising right? Why is there a shortage a i know huge world populations and with less annually to feed the people its about scarce supply and too much demand. It is likely only to get worse eat chicken i guess its still cheap ass all get out? Good protien!

To be honest, Id take a good pork steak over beef steak any day of the week dollar for dollar. I put a good rub on pork steak and fry it way hotter and longer than beef steak and get some bark on the outside. The right seasoning is a big part of it , pork needs to be spiced up more than beef IMHO . Or else fry it too crisp and add a can of condensed mushroom soup and simmer till you cant wait anymore.

So is this all basically caused from the beef packers?
No. If you mean the high price in the store. What led to that is a shortage of cattle in the USA due to drought reducing herds throughout the country in the past. The closing of the mexican border further reduced supplies of cattle in the USA. Trumps tariffs also helped. Plenty of other reasons that led to low number of cattle through out the country.
The Packers are just manipulating the markets in their favor by reducing slaughter when they want to increase thier profits.

We have purchased directly from a rancher annually for many years. It is an easy process that provides great quality beef tailored to the cuts we enjoy. Have wondered why the ranchers don't attempt to scale up with local processors to meet demand rather that continue to rely on larger packing operations.

Japan and others are buying our beef prime cuts. Americans are eating trim from Brazil which is being raised illegally. They are slashing and burning the Amazon rain forest producing cheap beef for the American market.

Who cares..........we just want cheap imports.

Yes, we buy all of our burger from a local guy west of GF.
Way too much Government regulations.
Early on when they started butchering their Buffalo they had too call a inspector to supervise the process. Now that is not the case.

Wirehair,

When beef prices are low people try to do the value-added thing to make a profit. You begin to see local products added to a meat case somewhere in a grocery store. Those products have to compete for market share shelf space against the packers.

Right now, prices are high and ranchers are selling direct not messing with it. Local processors were 6 months to a year out trying to get an appointment was difficult.

Many people go out to the ranch and purchase directly. On farm slaughter is a great thing. But do not advertise that you are doing this. Federal meat inspection rules say the rancher can assist you if you are taking the animal to an inspected facility regulated by the State. If you are taking it home to cut it up yourself beware. The rancher cannot assist you rolling the guts out or even pick it up with a loader tractor. And there is way more rules regulations and details.

Our state meat inspection rules mirror those of the federal. It's not as simple as going to the legislature making changes.
