I have recently sold my house. The one we are moving to has the gas line already in place in the garage. So it is going to be a Natural gas heater since the hard work is already done.
My old house I put in a 5000 watt electric heater that was by no means a power house at getting the garage heated up quickly, it was perfect for keeping it at a good 40-45*.
The new garage is twice the size and I would like to keep it at that same temp, unless I am working out there. It is fully finished and double insulated in the attic portion. So it needs to likely be twice the output, and if I want to work out there I want it to be able to bring the temp up to 60* in an hour or less.

Any advice on brand and size (output)? The total square footage is in the 1,400 area. 3 stall garage, with the 3rd stall being 2 deep and extra wide.

I've got a couple reznor gas units that so far I've been happy with. That is a pretty big area to heat, so I'm not sure how many btu's you'd be looking at, gotta be some sort of chart you can find as recommended btu's per sqft so I'm not much help there, but would recommend looking at reznor as a brand. I have similar sqft in my garage, however the reznor just supplements the floor heat for quick recovery after the garage doors are opened.

grossest Hardees ever in the history of the chain - good riddance!!!

I love me a thickburger but having been inside that hell hole I had to avoid it - usually did Taco Juanr's instead

Tip: Buy a TJ bean burrito and then wrap it around a hard shell - poor man's mega Taco Bravo. Impossible to beat. WAY better than an actual TB

I have the 45,000 BTU nat gas in my man cave garage. You might be able to get away with the 45 if it is insulated well. I keep my garage @ 68 degrees all winter. It costs me about $300 year to heat it.

they make fan-assisted exhaust models that you can vent out the side (wall) instead - since natural draft won't vent properly the fan makes sure the exhaust is vented

If insulated I think the 45k would be plenty. I have a huge two stall and the 45k gets to 70 degrees from 35 degrees very fast (~15 minutes?).

musky's reznor is the other of two units always mentioned as being the best when I crawled garage web sites prior to installing one

modine or reznor - can't go wrong

Guy, johnr is a Yeti owner now. 45,000 BTU's are for Igloo owners. :;:

Actually the price difference is probably not that much.

I'll second the 75000 reznor. Just had mine put in last year when I built the house. Garage is just over a 1100' and about 11' high. Cost difference between that and 60000 btu was only about $30 so well worth the extra cost in my opinion.

My garage is the exact same size as yours John and insulated the same. My 75K Reznor V3 works just fine, it'll get it as hot as you want in there. Congrats on the new home!

Guessing for $38 difference might as well go with the 75,000. Is it bad to go to big? I know with an AC unit you don't want the compressor kicking in and out a bunch so to big is bad if it cools your place down to quickly, would think with a heater it wouldn't matter.

Smaller units are more efficient... Like a V6 vs V8. As long as it's enough, bigger not necessarily better. No biggie either way. I went smaller because I hoped for quieter. Do they publish operating db? Dang things are loud. Don't realize til they turn off.

I went bigger than I needed and it works fine. Just less run time on cycles. In the winter I am constantly dragging ice fishing stuff in and out so I wanted a fast recovery.
