    Badlands mule deer

I used a muzzy in Colorado this year. I checked load accuracy with a scope then swapped to a peep since Colorado doesn’t allow scopes. I believe I was at 2350ish FPS with a 250 grain bullet. But even with a peep it’s still tough to hit a deer beyond 250 yards.

    Badlands mule deer

Winter kill has been mentioned a few times. Not sure if you guys ever look at Colorado weather but Gunnison gets as cold or colder and more snow. And has mature deer. I honestly believe the deer I killed was old and regressing. I am completely happy with the buck even though it won’t score. Is...

    Badlands mule deer

My buck is the one in my left hand. Wife's in in the right hand. The buck I killed is probably the most mature buck I saw during the hunt.

    Badlands mule deer

It could be great genetics. Or it could be the fact there is no otc mule deer season. There are extremely limited tags during the rut. The season with extremely limited tags only has a 5 day season not 16.5 days. Look at Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. Colorado kills those other...

    Badlands mule deer

Not really. I base quality off of mature animals. And if animals are allowed to grow up you will have bucks with good genetics that can achieve high scoring antlers. As for the public/private deal. I hunt a few different areas that are on the edge of private. The top 5-7 bucks I saw during the...

    E3 elk

I think the main thing is to get as far away from people as possible and you will run across some. I did see some extremely close to a main road the other morning right at first light. A couple hours later they were a few miles deep. Yesterday I ended up seeing at least 17. I was looking for a...

    Badlands mule deer

I finally filled my tag yesterday afternoon. Curious what type of quality everyone else is seeing? I believe the buck quality is way down in the badlands. Even last year I didn't see as many mature bucks as I have in the past. I scouted all day before the opener and hunted everyday except one...

    Bunghole Class

I haven't gutted a deer in years. Its all gutless now. But when I would gut them I would skin the 'kibbles and bits' to the bunghole. Then cut in a circle around everything. Then gut the animal and as long as you did a good job corn holing it everything pulls right through. I've never split a...

Best badlands unit for Whitetail hunting?

I've seen some really nice whitetails in the grasslands. That being said most are on private or right next to it. The biggest I have seen was on public but only a quarter mile from private. If I was going to pick the best unit I would say 4A. There are a ton of whitetails in that unit. But also...

    Badlands hiking

Last year was the first time I've seen one in the badlands. It was opening day of archery and my 9 year old was with me. It was 1-2 in the afternoon and we were hiking back to the truck after a 5-6 mile loop. We sat down on a clay/rock point for a 5 minute break. As soon as we get up and start...
