Well, ice can really suck at times:

No significant impacts yet, but this story isn't over by any stretch of the imagination.

located in Burleigh and Morton counties of North Dakota.

of the Heart River on the Mandan side of the river and south of
Fox Island on the Bismarck side.

- At 814 PM CST, An ice jam in the warned area is causing a
steady rise in water levels. Flooding of low-lying areas is
occurring and expected to continue.
- This includes the following streams and drainages...

River.
- Some locations that will likely experience flooding include
low-lying areas near the Missouri River from Misty Waters on
down through Fort Lincoln State Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Can’t believe you dorks out west built homes in places where flooding happens on the regular. Sheesh.
Wasn't there something about this on Mandan side years and years ago? Could have swore lakewood wasn't supposed to be built. Something about the city commission in mandan saying no to making it residential and a developer saying if you don't I am pulling all my business from Bis/Man and heading to AZ?...not sure but thought that was a deal....back in the day.

I believe the Corps tried to stop Southport from being built, but I could be wrong.

When the toilet is plugged quit flushing.

Drop the output at the dam to help let what’s in the system drain out. Since we now have all these wind turbines the electrical generation from the dam should no longer be needed

They are dropping the discharge rate at Garrison but it takes 3 days for that water to make it to Bismarck so it's not like turning off the faucet on an overflowing sink.

Allen would know better but it seems depending on the nature of the ice jam that dropping the flow could further lock it in

This is correct from what I have also heard. We had a democratic delegation in Congress at the time. One of them sat on a very important committee to the Corps from what I understand.

Only an idiot who hasn't done their homework would legitimately try to blow up ice.

Video of the guard opening it up with helicopters/water.

Friend who works for the corps said the release change was adjusted and went into effect in the early AM Thursday to keep the power supply and water schedule stable. Looks like it worked, although I’m sure you brilliant minds would have done it better.
