According to the DEC and the Chemung County Department of Health, Fred and Peanut were euthanized after a person involved with the investigation was bitten by Peanut.

Google search says that it's very uncommon for squirrels to get rabies and raccoons can now be treated. So I'm not sure why new york made a big issue of a near non issue with 2 animals that I'm sure have zero contact with a rabid animal.
