Lund Tyee GL

Anyone have a 189 Tyee GL or ridden in one? Looking for some feedback, curious on everyone's thoughts for fishability and doubling as a family rig.

102" beam is the main draw for me. Nice n wide.

I was told it has to be sparkly ️ to be able to be a fish catcher, unfortunately all i own is an old 86 starcraft with an 90hp 85 mariner. Love thise wide boats for choppy waters

My son-in-law has owned one for the last 4 years. He loves it. It has plenty enough room for his family, wife, grandson, family dog and plenty of storage. He live baits, so mostly pulling BBs. The 175 HP on it is large enough to pull a tube for the boy. The past 3 summers we have gone to New Town Area to fish for a couple of days and the last 2 I've pulled it with my Chevy 1500 4x4 with a 5.3 in it and have no problems pulling it. The 3 of us fish out of it and we have had 4 in it one summer with no problems. Live-well big enough to hold 20 eyes. Handles the big waves pretty good. He has taken it out a couple of times to the river that I know of and had no problems (Cattail & Desert areas) He only fish 4 or 5 times a year due to schedules and the kids soccer. But like aluminum, fiberglass doesn't rust. I had an opportunity to buy one when I bought my 17' Crestliner and I wished I would have. You know those could of would of's. Hope this help.

Doesn't the GL stand for fiberglass?

Have fished in bigger Tyee GL and Pro V GL boats and couldn't believe how hard they got pounded just from another boats wake. Both sounded hollow when bouncing over waves. Both boats had failed driver seat pedestals which I attributed to getting the snot kicked out of them with every bump.

Pretty much everyone I know that owned them sold them. When I get rides in them all I can think is that I'm glad I have a 21 ft glass. An 18 ft Sylvan viper and 1880 skeeter rode much better in my opinion. The 21 ft gl is a wave crusher though, ran one one summer. Nice riding rig but a ton of gremlins. I attributed it to Lund moving the glass operation to mexico that year.

If you're buying new there's cheaper options for same class of boat out there. Plus some of the competitors come pre rigged with electronics. Lund offers you nothing for electronics on new rigs wrapped into the purchase price which is higher than competitors cough cough. Skeeters come pre rigged with electronics as do Ranger I believe. Compare the prices and pre rigged options and I see no reason to purchase a Lund boat in that size. If it's used well shit i dunno. Prolly still look the other way.

I am a huge fan of Lund boats, I still run a 2004 Fisherman and if it sunk tomorrow, there's a part of me that would just say it was the best $22k I have ever spent. However, I am not nearly as big a fan of Mercury boat motors. Yeah, I know lots of people are, but I'd much rather run a Yamaha or Suzuki over a Mercury. I get why Lund went to factory rigged Mercury engines years ago, but when I go to buy my next boat (soon???), the Mercury may be the reason I don't buy another Lund. I have no experience with the Pro XS or Verado lines though.

All that being said, the people I know that run the Tyee GL series seem to really like them. A friend had a pretty new Ranger and recently got rid of it because it just had too many gremlins. So, all boats can have issues...one just has to prioritize which issues you can tolerate.

Point being, if I were to run across a Lund GL with something other than a Mercury engine, I'd be looking at it pretty closely.

Just because you buy a Lund doesn't mean you "have" to have a Mercury. Money talks if dealer really wants to sell. See many with other options on the backside of them. Pre-rigged, yes your at their mercy.

They've continuously changed their policy over the years, so it's not a bad idea for me to keep checking. But at one time, it was about a $4k increase to go with a Yamaha motor over a Mercury even though they were similarly priced engines. I see now they have a "no motor" option on their build-a-boat page.

Personally, I don't think I have ever run across a newer Lund with something other than a Merc on it, but I am sure there are a few like me with a non-Merc preference.

^^Alan^^, above you mentioned not being familiar with the Pro XS Merc - my 2019 Impact had a 150 Pro XS. Ran it 5 seasons...never had a single issue...maybe I got lucky! Last year bought a 19ft G3 with a 200 Yamaha VF on it. So far...so good. But like you said, Merc and Yamaha sell so many motors every year...kinda like Ford and Chevy trucks, be many folks that have issues, but in the big picture would guess the percentage with problems is pretty small. If I found the boat I wanted and it had a new Merc on it, would not hesitate to pull the trigger...but that's just me! Above you hinted at maybe a new boat...what are you looking at!
