EHD seems so foreign to me, our climate up here must be cooler enough to keep it at bay. I've never heard of a case in the turtle mountains. The deer herd seems healthy and thriving up here.

You are correct if the rain event happens when the temps are high enough for long enough for a generation of midges to occur. If we stay in the 60's I suspect that those temps will not assist in the midges going from egg to adult in a timely manner before the first frost ends this entire EHD event.

Yea you guys are extremely fortunate! I'm just glad I get to hunt Manitoba every year because these die offs are getting sickening down here!

True, after I get a fence up, then Ill be wishing there were more deer around probably. I need to get back into bow hunting, its been a few years since I poked a deer with a stick. Im planting plenty of habitat, so they will likely show up again.

Actually I got some Tahitian vanilla beans recently and made some delicious vanilla juice with those!!! Ill probably do Madagascan next...

Saw a dead whitetail in the Cannonball River 5 miles S of Elgin youth hunting tonight. Did see a dozen other deer that looked healthy, was raining when I left.

Game and Fish is finally releasing some information on this. Of course there are several reported cases, with only a handful of confirmed cases. There have been reports of dead antelope as well, but since the season started already they won't be accepting returned tags. I also asked about turning in deer tags in the affected units and there are no plans at this time to open that up. They eliminated all of the whitetail tags in my area (3E2) back in 2021, but increased the number of "any" licenses. These need to be converted to mule deer only licenses to preserve what little whitetails we have left. The population was just starting to rebound.

They won’t change them to mule deer only. That change was made to reduce the number of non resident archery mule deer tags. They are required by the legislature to give a certain percentage to non residents based off the number of mule deer licenses available. Any deer licenses don’t count towards this. With century code the way it is, this is the only way they can reduce non resident archery mule deer licenses.
