    Different Viewpoints .223/5.56

5.56 will excessively wear a 223-only gun. It has to do with the differences between military and varmint shooting ammunition and the chamber throats of the different rifles. Of course, the military brass can also be thicker to withstand the violence of a full-auto rifle. Any cautions...

homeowner was charged with manslaughter for shooting at home invasion suspects

During the classroom sessions for both my last ND CCW (taught by a Chief of Police) and my current MN CCW, we were told that even if a court determines the shooting was justified, we would be spending around $50,000 in legal defense costs. Our liability insurance may not cover that expense...

What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Biologists typically measure fish populations in #/acre. So five 2# fish = one 10# fish. 2. Small lakes are easy to "fish out." Does anyone else recall the big bluegills from Brush Lake? That lasted only about a season. MN is full of lakes with panfish-sized game fish. Blame angler...

    Ecoboost

Test your mileage vs. fuel quality. You have a trip odometer so it's easy to test different grades of gas 10 gallons at a time, to make the math easier. My wife's '16 Honda Pilot and my '09 Chevy 3500 get 30% more miles from a gallon of 91 octane non-ethanol than with 87 octane ethanol. The...

    this will light a frestorm

Many years ago, I witnessed a hitch receiver get torn out from under a well used Jeep Cherokee when an impatient boater attempted to yank his boat & trailer over a submerged lip at the bottom of a concrete boat ramp. I learned not to trust unibody vehicles for serious trailering. Even if the...

How would the new bill effect reciprocity with other states? if your ND license is only good in ND, it's not of much value.

    Recommendations on silencers

You asked where to purchase in ND. The gun shop on the east part of Main in Mandan sold a bunch of suppressors back when I lived in western ND. Talk to them before buying. As for effectiveness, as a rule $$$=effectiveness.

    Question about gun safes?

Get some advice from a locksmith. If you get a really heavy one, you may even want a locksmith service to install it. If nothing else, locksmiths get to solve problems with gun vaults.

Midlife crisis? Epiphany? Or am I insane?

When it's time for the student teaching, look into MSUM. They used to have a summer school student teaching option. That will save a bunch of time.

    Clearing Snow from Roof

When I lived in Hazen, ND, my shallow pitched roof let me shovel the snow off. The pitch on my Moorhead house is much too steep. Ice dams can be prevented with insulation. If the snow doesn't melt, no ice builds up under the shingles. The Hazen house only got an ice dam on the uninsulated...

    Anybody pay MSRP?

Shop carefully for quality of the machine and the reputation of the dealer's service. The only people who pay full price are those who are seduced by commissioned salesmen's pitches.

    True Fuel ??

I'd buy non-ethanol premium gas and mix it according to your engine's instructions with quality 2-stroke oil meant for air-cooled engines like Stihl's chain saw motor oil. Saving a bit on oil or convenience won't pay for a new auger.

    Ford Expedition vs F150???

As the past owner of a Suburban and present owner of a crew cab pickup, I'll tell you there are a number of differences. If it's for hauling people, the SUV is better. If you're hauling bulky stuff, it's the pickup. Highway cruising is much better in the SUV. For towing, the SUV will be more...

    that first colocoscopy

Many years ago, my first was without the total anesthesia. Unfortunately, the lady doctor had learned a few days earlier that her husband had been cheating on her. In my opinion, she was extra thorough and maybe a bit aggressive. The last one was anesthetized. But the attending nurse was a...

    Garage Lights

LED everywhere. 4' fixtures in the ceiling, "rope" LED lighting under cabinets. My farmland cash renter has done this in his shop, and it's very well lighted and unlike fluorescent, work well even when chilly. 4' shop light fixtures are sold at Costco, draw only 37 watts each. I saw a...

    "Hearing Protection" bill introduced!

I volunteer at the 100 yard indoor rifle range in West Fargo. There's still the sonic boom of any bullet fast enough to break the speed of sound. Since the entire range is concrete, we can hear the crack. But it's a lot quieter than the sound of a 25-06, which seems to penetrate even the best...

    Shooting bag/rifle rest?

To answer prairie ghost, rifle butt firmly against shoulder because letting a 338WM get a running start is just a little less painful than doing it with a 12ga shotgun. The rifle will shoot high any time the fore end is on a firm surface, but not if even my left hand is between the fore end and...
