    Well its ~

North Dakota puddle ice is one thing. Ginormous Upper Red Lake is an entirely different beast.

I haven't seen a duck in a while. It's buttoned up solid in SE ND.

    Ted Nugent on Baiting Deer

"Nugent was quoted saying the baiting ban would 'chase hunting families out of the sport for absolutely no reason.' " I think that's a bit of a stretch. If the ONLY way to shoot a deer is for you to put out bait, methinks you're not cut out to hunt anyway.

    neutering a dog

Seems like pretty drastic steps to solve a simple lack of obedience training. - - - Updated - - - But hey, if'n the dog didn't need 'em, guess it's worth the snip to not find him dead on the road.

    Aqua-Vu Micro

I was really thinking about getting one a while back, then had this weird paranoia I'd lose it down the hole. So for about the same amount of money, I sprang for the Aqua Vu AV715C. I like that his a much longer battery life, and is bigger. Not a run-and-gun option, but it works for setting up...

    Deer Meat

Clearly we're liars, though. No way anyone can get 70 pounds of meat off a white-tailed deer when it seems like 50 is the magic number. Moose, maybe. Deer, no way. ::: I'm a firm believer that more beers does not yield more meat. I stay pretty sober during my carcass-butchering process, and...

    Ice reports?

Deer hunted Friday by a big body of water. I've never seen it locked up during deer opener before. Even really cold years, it still stays open. It was completely locked up from shore to shore. I was amazed.

    Trimming out venison for sausage

I remember when I first learned butchering your own deer was even a thing (don't laugh, but back in 1998 or so I literally knew nobody who cut up their own deer. It was straight to the butcher. Every time). The tide turned when we had a fella come in to Gander Mountain, where I worked, and put...

    Deer Meat

I got 30 pounds of ground and about 40 pounds of whole meat (including shanks for stewing/osobucco) off my buck this weekend.

    Trimming out venison for sausage

I used to be super, duper meticiulous with trimming, to the point where it would take me all dang day to bone out and package a deer. I'm a dad now. Ain't nobody got time for dat. I've found I don't have to be too picky, and the ground product still tastes fantastic. And mind you, we pretty...

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

One more sleep then it's wheels up! Every year since 2002, I've had the same feeling: What is tomorrow going to bring? Will deer be running footloose and fancy free, or will it be something to see even one brown body in the woods? I relish the chance to walk up those hills again, marveling...

Long time lurker, short time member

The only questions that really need answering are: 1) NDSU or UND 2) Docked or undocked 3) Do you consider a silver Lab an actual dog breed 4) Who was your Jedi master that taught you bullhead fishing skills (prerequisite for all NDA members)

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

Weird thing is having a Federal duck stamp on the back of my phone because I have the license electronically only. Kinda sucks peeling it off after the season. :::

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

I was really looking forward to 20-degree weather Friday. Now 40s. Meh. Saturday/Sunday look a lot better. I guess it doesn't matter. I'll be in the woods no matter what!

New gear for 19-20 ice season

I'm not buying even a single jig this year. If I buy anything, it'll be an insulated Hub house since the two kiddos get mighty crammed in the flip-over with me.

Hockey and observations from a midlife crisis

The wife and I feel exactly the same way. If either kiddo truly wants to give hockey a crack, far be it from me to be the hypocrite and say "no way." But I'm not forcing their hand.

From Cold Water to Hot Water?

I dunno, I'm pretty darn impressed. Bunch of enterprising young dudes capitalize on a niche market, that pays them to goof around and entertain. Sounds like the American dream, to me. I watched another vid where it talks about if any of them have actual jobs. Four of them do the Youtube thing...

    Rifle Opener 2019 countdown

Something is better than nothing, which is what it's been lately. I'll take beans. The sooner that's off, the sooner they'll start on corn. I don't know a single farmer who enjoys trying to combine corn in the winter.
