    Sak Van Hook 8/3/2024

Went up to Van Hook to take my 86 yr old stepdad and brother-in-law out fishing. We stayed mostly up in the very north end of Van Hook and pulled spinners with crawlers in 8-24 ft of water. Most of our keeper eyes came shallow over by the old swimming beach area. Here's our total catch over 8...

    Shore Fishing Salmon

Sounds like a September hobby, and probably most chance for success would be from Sakakawea State Park on over to the dam and Riverdale area. I've tried them under a bobber over in the bay by the emergency spillway on the east side of the dam a couple times with no takers.

    NWT on Lake Sakakawea

Did the range of the tournament extend all the way up through Van Hook? I saw a number of pro-owned/sponsored boats at the north end of Van Hook on Saturday, but wasn't aware of any tournaments outside of whatever was being held over at 4Bears. That would be quite the run on a somewhat windy day!

    Sporting Clays

I wouldn't say serious, but I've shot league for a few years now. It's great to get some regular trigger time with friends.

    Property Tax Credit

Are they planning on letting it go back to nature, or is there another use for the area? One can't think this space will go unused, can they?

    Weather...

Yes, that pic above came from Lincoln. Largest I ran across at my place was a little over 2 inch diameter, but several friends (including the above pic) had hail up to 4 inches in diameter.

Flax sucks. No question about that as its straw is remarkably tough and long lasting, but safflower is my absolute least favorite crop in ND. That shiite just absolutely sucks as it dries out. Those leaves can be sharp as a knife! We had to wear welding gloves to unplug a jammed up combine!

    Public land transfer bill

Yeah, TAT has been trying for years to get control of everything along Sak that is currently held by the Corps at an elevation of around 1854 (or, was it 1860?). There's no good in that for the State or its non-native residents in such a land transfer to the Tribal Governments. They get it...

    Public land transfer bill

I think you may have missed the part where when it comes to minerals (at least), the State was in a net zero win/loss situation. Hence, my question about TAT. Someone is winning in this, and if it's not the State or Feds, that really only leaves TAT.

    Public land transfer bill

Is the TAT trying to expand their reservation boundaries by purchasing land off the reservation?

    Montana sage wall

There are plenty of examples of straight lines in the world of geology: And while that's on a pretty large scale, right down to the molecular level, a fair number of minerals have a cubic crystal lattice: The first image is Devil's Tower and shows the natural tendency for basalt to...

    Shoreline casting around Lake

I am afraid I don't fish Darling, but I do know there are a number of access points along the western shoreline. If you haven't already, check out NDGF's mapping service: https://gfappspublic.nd.gov/wheretofish/Results.aspx And, of course, your concerns may very well be warranted in that...

    Montana sage wall

Yep, much more akin to Devil's Tower though than a man-made wall. This thing was already millions of years old by the time people walked on North America.

    Montana sage wall

That dude is definitely not a geologist. I hated mineralogy, but that looks like a basaltic intrusion in a much larger granitic/diorite(?) formation. Lots of lichens and other coverings on the rocks. He could use a rock hammer! Those gouges in the rock he thinks is a kitchen are often formed...
