I started growing heirloom tomatoes about five years ago. I was sceptical at first like many others. No doubt they are more difficult to raise than hybrids but they taste better than most hybrids. Have had good luck with pink varieties from northern Europe. The biggest obstacle seems to be...

My dog is going blind PRA

Last week I had to put down my 17 year old Brittany. Several years ago we found out that he had a bad heart. I took him out a few times after that but after five minutes he was laboring to breathe. So I decided it was time to retire him. He didn't like staying at home but I'm pretty sure heart...

Chili, one of my many favorites

Lots of good ideas here. Slow cooked makes all chili better. 4 hours minimum. Yes it is always better the next day. I have tried different types of chili powder some are spicier than others. Just don't forget the garlic! I also like to use a variety of beans. Plenty to choose from at your...

    South Dakota tribe to open....

The Colorado Springs newspaper ran a series of stories about the downside of the new pot laws. Their facts put a very negative spin on legalization. I have read opposite views. I guess time will tell for sure. I know for sure the issue has really divided the rural and city folks.

12 or 20 gauge for pheasants?

Full choke 12 gauge sounds like cornfield pass shooting. Hunt with good pointers or flushers and close shots are common. Even later in the season. Getting the gun up fast becomes more important than long range shooting.

Fargo Diversion and the ND Game and Fish

Very true ObiWan. In 1993 there were record rains in Bismarck. There were hundreds of homes in Bismarck that had water in the basement. I worked in many of them. The ground water problems in North Bismarck are well documented. Sump pumps and drain tile have become a requirement since 93.

    Women ideas!!!

My wife's cousin was upset with the dandelions in her yard so she got the pump sprayer out and filled it up with Roundup. She did get rid of the dandelions. Plus a good amount of the nice green grass.

    Trees for wildlife

Overall the plan sounds good. Diversity keeps diseases at bay. Like was stated earlier do not plant ash trees. It may not happen but the emerald ash borer is on the way. It devastes ash trees.

Worst food I've had in a while

I had a 12 ounce sirloin at Jack's in Bismarck last Saturday. It was great. Not the most or least expensive but overall a good bang for the buck.

Creosote is generally considered a big no no for vegetables. I have several raised beds all built out of old redwood and cedar decking. Supposedly the creosote migrates into the soil. Why chance it.
