    Yep, I have made my own while out on the water using a long-shanked mustad hook. Worked just fine, all you are doing is trying to get the crawler to spin a little and that doesn't take much. A simple leatherman or other needle-nosed pliers will suffice.

    Yep, water levels and substrate are a hell of a lot more important. It is far better to have 10% of the vast number of eggs laid in any given year survive than it is to have 0.005% survive, even with onerous slot limits that produce more eggs.

    Neoprene, period. It's the stretchy, grippy sling. Used to have pretty leather slings, they have gone the way of the dodo bird in my gun cabinet. I got tired of having to always slide it back up on the shoulder when out for a walkabout. No particular brand comes to mind tho.
