Why does the label on what I've always and forever called a 20 lb propane tank now say it only holds 15 lbs of propane? Did I miss the cosmic shift in propane tank designations? I hadn't noticed a change in the cost of getting a 20 lber filled and the propane guys still refer to them as 20 lbers. What gives? Do we still have legitimate 20 lbers? I'm confused and intrigued. Thanks.

Blue Rhino reduced the amount of propane in their standard 20-lb exchange tanks from 17 pounds to 15 pounds to control rising costs, including steel, diesel fuel, and the propane itself. While a 20-lb cylinder is designed to hold 20 pounds of propane, the 15-pound fill level in exchange tanks was a response to increased operating costs for the company. Refilling your own tank at a location that charges by the pound can be a more cost-effective option for getting a full 20 pounds of propane

Tractor Supply is my go to. Used to go to Uhaul in GF but they always have a damn excuse why they can't do it so TSC is better.

Kind of comical: Uhaul has these bearded guys with jacked up pickups working. One time it was too cold to fill. The next time their computer system was down so they couldn't fill. At TSC everytime I go it has been a petite female employee who fills it with no excuses. Prices seem about the same. I usually fill 4 tanks at a time.

I think one thing I'm gonna stop doing is refilling 1lbrs. Are those "green refillable" 1lbrs safe/any good? I hate dragging around a 20lbr for my buddy heater.

I have 3 of the refillable ones. 1 of the 3 I will not use anymore. I had propane escaping while using my portable blackstone last year and I had to unscrew it while it was still on fire. Then I had the same tank on my buddy heater in my deer blind. It went up in flames and I had to open the window and throw the on-fire heater out the window into the snow. Needless to say I was completely drenched in sweat due to the stress of it and running out to kick snow all over it to put it out. Walked back to the truck and got my other tank and regained my bearings. Scary morning.

Which brand? The Flame Kings I’ve heard mixed reviews. The new Fuel Kegs are supposed to be better.

Buy a 5 or 11 pound tank if you have a place that'll refill them. Was nicer than dragging around a 20 pounder or a milk crate of 1 pound bottles

 That's terrifying. The bag i have for my buddy heater has pockets for an two additional tanks. If I have an extremely long day of fishing, I can usually get by on three tanks. I think I'll pick up four of those Fuel Kegs and start with that.

Ahhh......icefishing.....can't wait

Good to know. I usually use Uhaul without issues but TSC is about the same distance for me.

Three of us filled our own at the Angle out my my 1000 gallon tank. For the boat shore lunch I had a 6 gallon pancake tank.
Seems we've danced to the same tune a time or two there Zogman. Brings back real good memories that should probably be in the "good in life" thread, but I won't bore anyone. It's better to learn those things for yourself.

I fill the 1# all winter for buddy heater.
I always do too but I wonder if I should only do it so many times before the tanks should be thrown then start all over. I get real nervous when I open my tailgate and get a strong propane smell.
