I found a bunch of griz poop whilst grouse hunting. I went home and drank in the back yard instead.

I have a short story written up about a black bear encounter from this fall. Based on a true story. Just about 3000 words. It’ll be part of a larger ebook. I could use some feedback on it if anyone wants to read it.

Where would we find said story?

Well..........sister was able to fill her tag on Friday Oct. 13th with a beautiful cow moose. I'm incredibly proud of her.

She had a son take his own life on Thursday the 5th of October. Hopefully none of us ever have to deal with it like she and her husband have to, but as you all know it was a very tough process and something they will never get over.

I didn't bring the thought of going moose hunting to her at all, but behind the scenes I was still talking with people and had a pretty good grasp on several options. Thursday afternoon, the 12th, she called me and asked if I would still take her on Friday so at 4:30 am I was in in her driveway to get her. On the drive up she was battling so many emotions and wasn't sure if she could even pull the trigger if she got the chance. I told her there was no pressure and if we did nothing but drive around and chat it is still a good day. We started off glassing where I had seen a cow and calf about a month previous and was told she was still hanging around the same corn and bean fields. Never seen her so went to another spot with no luck. Went back to the original spot and there she was......100 yards off the road in the corn. It was on a side hill so she was very exposed. Laura took 3 shots with the cow standing there for all 3 and missed each time. As it turns out she was battling with herself and having trouble pulling the trigger and was closing her eyes. The cow and calf just walked off and disappeared into the corn. We went out to make sure, but I already know they were clean misses.

Got back out of the corn and a pickup pulls up that turned out to be a guy with a bull tag. We exchanged numbers and went on our way. After a while we decided to head up towards Upham where the plan was to spend the night and try a couple spots where cows were seen recently. We got west of Harvey and the bull hunter called me and said he was right by a cow standing in the ditch. Took us about 15 minutes to get back there, and by then she was a good 500 yards out, but kinda headed towards an old farm yard. I went around and found a trail that went up to the trees, we got out and tried to get to the edge of the trees that she was coming to. When we were still back in a little ways from the edge I could see the cow was within 100 yards and closing. I had Laura stand behind a tree and I got down and set up the shooting stick for her. I peeked around the tree and the cow was headed right in on us, so I had Laura drop to her knees and readjusted the shooting stick. She had a tough time finding it in the scope, but the cow stopped right behind two trees at about 30 yards. The only thing exposed between the trees was her chest. I told her if she can find the moose at all shoot, as it was all good. She shot and made a great hit.....but it got a little tense shortly. The cow was running away from us, but Laura shot a second shot that who knows where that went, but the moose spun around......pinned her ears straight back.......and was coming directly at us fast . Laura screamed "Take the gun" and pushed it towards me. I did, but fortunately I didn't have to shoot her again. When I jumped to my feet she veered away with blood pouring out both nostrils. The cow ended up out into what at one time was the farm yard so I was able to drive right to her with the pickup and get her gutted and loaded myself. Lot of emotions flooded out and many tears for us both, but in time it will be a hell of a memory for us both. Typical dumbass me in all of the excitement, I didn't even think about all of the blood in the photos so not gonna share them.

Sub_Elect.....any chance you can re-post your Sconi story. By any chance does your truck have any shades of orange that resemble a pheasant? If yes, then all bets are off when it comes to where/what a Sconi will shoot at.

I tried to look back at you posts from last year around this time but wasn't able to find the thread.
