I’ve always heard that I can send him in for one of the youth muley buck tags and if not drawn he will get his statewide whitetail tag? Is that how it goes? Anyone that’s done it in the past few years I would appreciate some insight. TIA

Yup exactly how you stated. Same goes for youth doe tags. If you send them for one of the draw units and they get denied they automatically get a statewide tag.

Remember what happened the last time? Soil bank and CRP. Fast forward 20 years and we were in our heyday of deer, ducks and upland birds. Then someone decided CRP was too expensive, and here we are.

I don't think many members on here remember the Soil Bank days. As it ended early 60's. And CRP started in 1985 or 1986. After 1997 is when the Duck population took off. And Pheasants about 1999. The winter of 96 and 97 were tough on Pheasants. There was lots of water after 97 and some roads were under water for over 20 yrs. N.D. Will never see the amount of game there was out there in them banner years. When you could walk 1/2 mile and you had you limit of Pheasants Them were the days.

My DAD put one quarter into soil bank and my uncle retired and put all of his into soil bank that was right next to ours Lordy we had birds. LB

And is it a fair assumption that no one in your family is farming that land? CRP, while great for wildlife, stopped a whole generation from getting a chance to farm. Their parents put it in CRP and left it there for the check and their kids left the farm and got jobs in town. I can show you numerous farms around here where that happened. It wasn't the whole reason, as the 80s were tough and many young people didn't want the struggle like their parents had.
It is crazy though that for almost half my life, all the tillable acres around where I live were in CRP and now there is hardly any CRP, its all farmed. But we still have deer and birds as there is still rangeland and sloughs around here.
