cass county, not in the bad part tho.
Ok, I bought a 410 shotgun for my kid. I didn't know how expensive shells were for these and shot selection is poor. What are they good for? are they legal for most game? What do you guys use them for?

410's are very difficult to use as there is very few pellets going out the end at the target. 410's and 28 ga's are better off in the hands of more experienced shooters IMO. Kids need to have success or they tend to NOT want to continue something. I've tried 410's on doves and grouse and boy oh boy was THAT a challenge. I gave it up as I like dove breast wrapped in bacon on the grill way way to much to keep shooting a 410. I Pretty much SUCKED at using a 410. I now sport my 12 ga with low base 7 1/2's to chase doves. I eat better that way. Good Luck!!

Bought a .410 for my 7 year old last fall. Good light gun to practice with, shells are just as expensive as 20ga though. The .410 fit him a little better than the youth 20 last year so that's what he shot. Practice a lot shooting stationary targets. This year we'll probably up to the 20 and try some clays.

FWIW he did shoot 2 turkeys last fall with 6 shot out of that .410 at 20 yards.

I also picked up a .410 a couple years back, thing kicked like a mule. My daughter would cry after shooting it. I purchased a stock recoil pad for it that cost almost as much as the gun, it still has a strong kick but is mostly absorbed into the pad.

Looking back I wish I would not have picked it up. least used gun in the house.

Was it a single shot by chance? The one i got was a mossberg pump, I shot it a few times just to try it, no more recoil than a .22

My 6 year old son shoots the mossburg in a 20ga. He handle the recoil well says it don't kick to bad. I tried to shoot the gun but it is so short that it kicks up on me and about takes off your cheek bone.

I had a single 410 when I was 10, bought it with my own 'allowance' money--mom had to do the paperwork. Dad saw I bough my own...goes and buys my sister a 410 and my brother a 20, lets just say, mom wasn't happy....he he. We still have the single 20 to this day! Someone in the family has the other 410, but I sold mine quite a few years back.

I do mostly waterfowl. I know .410 steel is out there but it seems very underpowered for ducks or geese.
