I’ve been making fishing rods for nearly 20 years. Over Christmas break, our 4-H club built ice fishing rods and then headed to the lake to test them out—with success all around.

A few years ago, I wrote and received a grant from North Dakota Game and Fish to create a shareable “trunk” of rod-building components, allowing 4-H clubs across the state access to rod-building kits. Since then, our club has also built summer rods.

This is just an FYI—if you’re interested in youth rod building and 4-H, there are resources available. Please feel free to reach out with questions, and I’d be happy to point you in the right direction.

That is pretty sweet. I find myself kind of wanting to make a rod.😁

Question for the rod builders out there - what are some solid remedies for broken rod tips? Broke the tip on an ice rod over the weekend and wondering what I can do about it. Thanks in advance

Not much you can do other than put a new tip top on it.

That's one of the easiest fixes. Just buy a new eye and glue it on the end.

If the break is lower in the rod (not in the bend) I'll add a splint inside the blank, rod bond epoxy, wrap, and epoxy.

If the tip is broken, gluing a new tip tol is the normally the best action. Hot melt that comes with the tip top kits can melt in the hot sun. I use a a quick set epoxy in lieu of the hot melt glue.
