It's not the schools fault that they shut down because of the cold. It's the parents that get pissed (who have their lawyer on speed dial) if a bus quits and their kids have to be in the cold until someone comes and gets them. It's the lawsuits that dictate when the school closes.

^^^^ this and the fact that there are a lot of disinterested parents and under privileged kids that can't dress there kids appropriately ... dropped my daughter off at school yesterday and couldn't believe the amount of exposed skin a lot of kids had...kids are dumb and think this isn't real cold, it only takes one case of severe frostbite or a death and the schools at fault, even though it's the parents to blame in today's mamby-pamby society law suits would be flying

there is no school here to day but to toughen my kid up i am making him wait out side the door like there might be and he walked up hill it will also be uphill on the way home. i gave him a wind breaker and my old polaris stocking hat and some wonder bread sacks for his boots. Gotta get these little fuckers to harden up like all us bad asses from back in the day.

I forgot about the ol bread bags in the boots. Damn feet would get just as wet from all the sweat.

Our school is open today, but I am surprised they sent the rural buses out. Rural districts cover a much wider area than they did years ago. We have some kids who live in some very remote areas that ride the bus close to two hours to school and then close to two hours back home. If one of those buses gels up, we could potentially have a very serious issue on our hands. In temps like these, I would say you have between 5-10 minutes in one of those yellow buses before you have a very, very cold temp. And most of those kids of course jump on the bus with little to no winter clothing.

Back to the school thing --- Everybody is getting soft -- all they do is point fingers --- i read the facebook school mom 1500 posts after the gov said it would be up to the schools. They were out for blood-little johhny is not going to school!!!! to cold. Fact is little johnny is wearing tennis shoes (his dad bought him the best boots at scheels that money could buy - but he didnt want to wear them cus they are "cool") and little johnny is wearing a thin little coat and he has ankle high socks. Little Johnnies mom whines to her boss she wants more PTO.

the bus issue isn't just gelling up. its getting them and keeping them warm enough to tolerate even when they are running. you best be dressed for winter if you gonna sit on a big yellow school bus for 2 hours in these temps.

Are the newer buses heated better nowadays? Heat was a joke back in the day.
Back in the day, the heaters were more towards the rear of the bus I believe and if you were the first one on the bus....guess which seat you sitting in?? uh huh thats right ...

Well, I haven't been in a yellow bus in these extreme temps. But last year I was on one in single digit temps and let me tell you.... The walls were frosted over from the floor and up to the ceiling like you wouldn't believe. It was COLD! I can't even imagine in extreme temps like this. The kids will be chiseling 3D "art work" into the frost on the walls. haha

Ahh, the good old days. When America wasn't lazy and fat, right?

Nothing new, boys. Every generation thinks the current young'uns are wimps.

"Back in the good old days, your lungs exploded from the cold, and your eyes froze right out of your head. Ever' single one of us died!".

So with tomorrow starting off substantially colder then today does that mean all these schools are going to automatically call off for a second day in a row?

At coffee early this AM saw two ladies that work at Scheels. Jokingly asked if they thought it would be busy. They said very busy since there is no school lots of Moms and kids would be in shopping. Go figure.
