So question for any welders out there. I have only welded with a flux welder and would like to get set up with a gas mig welder. My question is where can you get the cylinders as well as gas for one, as well as some rough estimates on prices?(bisman area)

Praxair, had to buy the tank as they no longer rent them. Refills they just exchange the tank.
This was around 8 years ago and tank was around 250 for a shortie and exchanges are around 50, rough numbers, it's been a while since I needed one.

I dont yet, still looking into that one. My welding would be extremely limited (one time a year or so)so I dont want to much money wrapped into it. Mostly be used for some autobody welding and some/very minimal farm welding.

If you watch facebook marketplace you can snag welding gas cylinders pretty cheap sometimes... I bought a big one for like $50.... just make sure whatever you get for a welder has the hose and regulator with it.

I use my hobart handler 140 for about the same thing you'll be using yours for... It works well and is currently set up for FC welding. Once I finish up the roll of FC that I have in it i'll swap it over to gas..

I to don't weld every day, I have Titanium 170 and a Titanium unlimited 200 welders they are both 120v/240v welders,these are for my shop in my back yard, make Sure if you buy a wire welder you get extra contact tips for mig gun, if you would buy a tank make sure it has the DOT stamp on the tank, if it doesn't have the stamp, they maybe won't fill it

My smallest welder is a Hobart 180 on 220v, I run straight wire with 75% argon/ 25% c02 way better then flux core. My bottle I own and do it all at AWG welding supply on strip Mandan. Not cheap setup put it works great. Some of 110v welders are play toys for really light metal only and don't weld nice, my other welder at other shop is bigger Miller welder made to run a lot. Check on line some of newest technology is impressive for sure. Mine 20 to 30 year old.

I have a 110 Lincoln and a Miller 175.

The little Lincoln gets used more and is also portable and can run off a generator easily.

I have a 140 Lincoln wire and a 275 Lincoln stick and 99% of my welding is with the stick welder. I know when I weld with the stick it's not going to break.

We used to do thst i high school the 3 types of welding wire feed is what i was ok at but they had stick feed and that was basicly a rod on fire and u weld from it.

depends on how big of a tank you have. It's not expensive though... I have the biggest one you can get and I think the last time I swapped it, it cost me like $80-$100...maybe even less, it's been a year+ since I filled it... just make sure you remember to turn your bottle off at the end of the day when you are done welding as they will most likely eventually leak down to nothing.....

A welder is one of those things I've always wanted yet have resisted buying. I'm fairly certain I'd do way to much:

"I'm gonna fix this 'til it's broke."

Which is why despite my desire, I've resisted.

Recently purchased a Lincoln 252 MIG. It's a really nice welder and does a good job adjusting itself. I grew up with a Miller Matic and have done everything from boot scrapers for a 4-h project 30 years ago to welding a trailer to various things on the farm. After that you'll need a plasma cutter then things get really fun!

Have you, or has anyone else cut aluminum with plasma ? I bought myself one for Christmas but haven't hooked it up yet. I've used them on steel but not aluminum. I see mixed results on youtube.

My experience with aluminum is nil. 95%+ of equipment on the farm was steel.

yes i have cut aluminum, i run a higher air psi to blow the slag, some of the cut is welded back together but a couple taps loosens it up, usually get a nice clean cut.
I have a miller wire feed and a contract through prax air. I really don't use enough gas to have a contract anymore so when these are gone i will buy the 3 tanks.
The real welders out there use arc welders.

Any experienced tig welders?

In the market for a 110/220v dedicated tig machine for welding steel on trailers, custom fab and hobby. Long time ago spent a couple years welding thin wall chromoly and mild steel with a Miller that was a dream to use with no training other than basic instruction. Made great welds after some practice.

Which current Millers should I consider? Any of the lower cost options come close in quality?
