Neighbor snapped this just south of Longfellow Elementary off Elm. With the amount of alerts I'm getting on my phone and the "shelter in place" messages, you think it was a 1,000 lb grizzly LOL. He's just a cub!

LOL - that young bear (yearling?) knows they made a mistake and is trying to exit - hastily

Latest news is they let the bear peacefully exit the area.

Given FPD's itchy trigger fingers when it comes to critters, I'm honestly a bit surprised.

Good on you, Yogi! Now just stay away from vehicles and pic-a-nic baskets and you should be fine ;)

PD’s in a bit of a no-win if they start shooting without the bear having already hurt/killed a person or a pet, or the bear locked-in on doing either of those in the next few seconds.

Nobody with time to plan would choose the handgun and duty ammo issued to any city LEO for a bear.

Nobody w/time to plan would choose a 5.56 AR w/most likely FMJ ammo for a bear.

Swat sniper is likely to have a very capable rifle platform and know how to use it. That person is also likely aware and would be concerned about pass-through and any potential for damage to an unintended target by same.

A shotgun slug might pass through.

Shotgun buckshot is probably the safest bet for everything in the area that isn’t the bear. Depending on how far away the shooter is, you run a risk of not anchoring the bear. That significantly compounds the danger until the bear is finished.

Now, couple all that w/folks probably gawking w/their cell recording and the resultant outcry from the idjuts that refuse to understand why large omnivore potential predators were driven well away from civilization is soon as man developed spears/bows, and even more so when ships hit the Plymoth Rock w/any sort of firearm, and unless someone is about to be involuntarily converted to bear scat, probably just best to try and keep folks away and coax the bear towards the river and hope it’s had us fill of city life.

Even if I’d been in the back yard w/the dog and the bugger made an appearance, I’d rather not have to kill it, mostly to avoid the public outcry of above described idjuts.

Ya probably know ma isn't to terribly far away. Let it be and it'll find its way. No reason to take it out unless mauled someone.
