For squirrels, any bird feed with corn or just half a cob of field corn. For mice it's still peanut butter until I find something better.

The difference of attitude between North/South concerning squirrel still astounds me. They're still regulated as a game animal in ND. From my reading and correspondence, I believe the "damage clause" gets stretched a bit...

Anyways, field corn, peanuts in shell, bird seed etc: Bolt or single shot .22 and CCI CB ammo; less noise than an air rifle. Be very aware of your backstop. The bullets are 29grn and ricochets sound like a whistling firework. I sight dead on @20yds and "shade" high @35. Its best to have two scopes IMHE: ^^^^ TREE SQUIRREL vvv not ground. You said in the OP you couldn't use lead. I promise the CB's are no louder than a finger snap through a bolt or single shot or lever/pump for that matter. I wish they'd load the frangible hollow point available in CCI "Quiet" which is about a "lady finger" firecracker: Maybe less; still audible +/-200yds.

^^^^JSYK: Both loads require hearing protection from a handgun. It's a good "pop". I'm not sensitive enough to evaluate/discern the noise between these rds and "hell fire" loads.
