I understand that this may be the "right" thing to do, but what happens when the guy gets probabtion and decides to try it again. I'd rather put some lead in them the first time around and not have to worry about them coming back. Easier said than done, but I've played that situation out in my head many times.
Or sued because you hurt them. There's always a bleeding heart liberal attorney wanting cases like that.

A pretty good friend of mine had a situation a few years back.
He was coming home, a motorcycle was parked in his driveway and the guy was at the front door knocking, so he drove around the block thinking it was a salesman and he would just be gone when he circled back. Well the bike was still in his driveway, but the guy was no where to be found, his walk through garage door was open just an inch or so. He gets his .45 out of his pickup, has his son (9) to dial 911 and he walks into the garage. Sure as shit the guy is trying to bust his house door open, he shouts to him to get on the ground holds his gun towards the guy. Well fortunately the guy listens and gets on the ground and stays there.
Less than 3 minutes go by and there are a half dozen cop cars out there and they jump on the guy (roughly) and get him handcuffed and hall him off.
Story ended well for all involved. He sure did not want to shoot a guy, he didn't want his house broke into, he didn't want his son to see a guy get shot by his dad. The cops handled it, no one was injured, the house was safe, and no life changing events for the innocent.

Believe me you guys don't want to be shooting anyone if at all possible to not. Seems like putting a hole in a bad guy would be cool, and easy, well I know my buddy is damn glad it didn't come to that, it was hard enough the way it all played out.

Yeah, a lot of tough talk on this forum, but most people would be pissing themselves if they heard a window break or a door get kicked in during the middle of the night. I have a handgun in a fingerprint safe in my nightstand, but I sure hope I never have to get it out.

In CCW classes they teach to never point a gun directly at someone unless you plan on pulling the trigger, best chance for assault being charged on you even as a victim especially if they are not intending personal harm on you or anyone directly like in a robbery situation you described, he got lucky if he indeed did point gun at him from behind not being in immediate danger for his own personal safety at that point, best to pull gun but keep it pointed down and make verbal commands and go from that point first.

I don't want to shoot anyone either, but the standard rule for law enforcement is seven paces. If he has a knife and that close he better drop right now or you shoot. If he is unarmed and under seven paces you better be aiming at him or be 6 foot 4 inches, 230 pounds and in good shape. If not your likely to die.

I guess I'd rather give a punk a hell of a bruise and something to think about than a toe tag. It'd be a lot easier to sleep at night knowing you didn't take another life IMHO. My relative just grins when he talks about drillin guys and hearing em howl in pain, calls it "therapeutic".
I've check on some the ammo and they worn you if the subject is within a certain distance they may be lethal.

I have no desire to kill another person ever. And there's no doubt if someone broke in I'd be scared shitless, but I would do ANYTHING to protect my wife and son. When someone breaks into your home, all joking a side, your basic instincts will kick in to protection mode, and you'll do what's necessary to protect your family.
