Big balls to let it get that close and not move. I Had chokecherry and plum seed shit on my stand when I was a kid. (Pallet with a chair) I cussed the critter and cleaned it off . About an hour into the hunt a porcupine waddled along and started climbing the tree ever so slowly so I dropped branches on it and it kept climbing then I started dropping arrows with broadheads on it and they just glanced and off pretty soon I was grabbing for anything within reach to throw at that MF . I finally ended up ( and this is no shit) throwing my bow at it right below my feet before it finally gave up and crawled back down. I can't imagine if it had been a bear.

Same thing happened to me but I was in a hang on stand. Came up the back side quick. About the time I was wondering how far up he had made it he sniffed the back of my neck with his wet nose. My knees started shaking I'm not gonna lie, thought about elbowing him in the face but about that time he went back down. He was allot bigger than this one, fricken curious buggers ha ha ha.

Have a buddy in Montana that this happened to also years ago. It kept coming up the tree no matter what he did. It finally quit when it got right below him and he took a broad headed arrow and poked the sucker right on the nose and not softly either. Bastage got down off his tree fast. Said it was only around 250# or he would have stuck it. The bear never came back to his stand while he was there.

And then I found this the other day, black bears are one thing and usually stay away from humans, but this giant polar bear hand fed,not a chance.

Northern MN on a canoe trip with high school kids from church. Sleeping on an island. Bear right outside the tent. Could hear him breathing. Couple of kids started crying. I ain't gonna lie. It was hair-raising. It wandered around the camp a bit, then loafed off somewhere else. When they're breathing about 12" from your head, there is a certain amount of pucker-factor.

Had a cub climb my stand in Canada while mama bear was shaking the bait can. Smacked him on the nose with the rifle barrel and he scampered down. Glad mama didn't see me.

Think I would stay away from lever door handles in bear country.

Buddy was a guide for brown bears on Unimak island.
He and a client were sleeping in a small tent when a big bear showed up.
He got to his knees shoulder his shotgun in complete darkness.
The bear circled the tent brushing up against it all the way around then it bumped into him knocking him to the ground. He was ready to take a shot laying on his back but the bear just walked off. Crazy to think an ultra thin piece of nylon separated him from it!

He had all kinds of crazy ass stories every fall!

Young bear are more apt to do this.
Has happened to me maybe 10-15 times but only 1 bigger bear and I blasted him behind the skull at about 2 feet!

A few bear encounters in the BWCA here as well, always camped on islands, smaller the better, still the rascals would get a whiff of dinner, usually a fish fry if they were down wind in the area and swim out to visit, had one lay a scent trail from the parked canoe up to the tent,we could hear him pissing close bye marking the area, only a canoe paddle for defense, another pulled our food pack outof a tree,"some beech" sure liked our raman soup packets.

Always had whistling bottle rockets in my pack, came in handy a few times.

Boy, this is exactly right. they'd get into our packets of Kool-Aid, or peanut butter. What a mess. And I'm sure it was a younger smaller bear outside our tent (actually, two nights in a row). But still, when I thought about a thin layer of nylon between those teeth and claws, and my pretty face... yikes.
