The tach on my mercury bounces every so often at idle. It'll jump from idle speed to 2-3000 then drop back. It seems to do it more when the motor has not been revved yet. I read something about turning a rotary selector switch on the back and then setting it back to the original position to remove some possible corrosion. Has anyone else had this problem?

Mine does it too, just give it a quick flick and it goes right to work. Cheapo electronics now days. Only does it at first start up too. Faria gauge.
