We used one of these when on the farm and also had one made out of fiberglass and that one was really sweet.
Just make sure you leave a little snow on the shingles and don't take the little sand pebbles off of them.

When I lived in Hazen, ND, my shallow pitched roof let me shovel the snow off. The pitch on my Moorhead house is much too steep. Ice dams can be prevented with insulation. If the snow doesn't melt, no ice builds up under the shingles. The Hazen house only got an ice dam on the uninsulated garage roof.
