Depends upon what scares them and their known/comfortable escape options. I’ve been the beneficiary several times of elk that were shot at by hunters above that then looped below them to travel a different route back up to heading. Between myself and a buddy we’ve killed 5 elk that way and another buddy should’ve made it 6. Fall of ‘20 I mouth-whistled a group of 5 rag horn bulls from about 3/4Mi in to 400yds. They’d sen and/or smelled hunters above them, but, the big group of cows had already gone by. The bulls did NOT want to go past what they’d seen or smelled, but, they didn’t want to lose the herd either. We had what very little breeze there was in our favor. I did my best impromptu cow call and short bugles by whistling as that’s all I could think to do and didn’t have any calls with us. Bulls had to look into the rising sun to look our way. I must’ve sounded enough like “elk” to make losing 50% of the elevation they’d gained worth NOT having to go up past what they’d seen/smelled. I’ve made and/or watched follow-up shots on poorly placed 1st shots where the wounded elk is trying to stay w/the group going up. If I wounded an elk, couldn’t put it down for good and lost sight of it, aid want a REALLY good fix on where I saw it last, then I’d be trying to find the nearest water source.
