Ice, ice, and more cold watered ice is your huckleberry. Shock em' with ice all day long..

The other thing I do with ALL my fish, fresh and saltwater, is bleed them before I kill them. Then I agree with Rut2, ice them down immediately after you bleed them to prevent meat spoilage.

Bled and iced are essential for the best flavor/quality. I'm squeamish about eating fish yet am not adverse to wiping off slime with my T-shirt. Cold beer is nearly as important to me as bled fish on the cutting board. I kill one mess for the 4th and another for New Year's Eve. New Year's is all Tailrace cat, Darling and Audubon pike.

If a walleye slips in after the 4th it's bled and dead. (14-18in)

Also: Zero belly meat and red lateral line removed.

I don't have a boat. Topwater pike are a lot of fun and as September approaches; the species variety increases from the Tailrace shore using nightcrawlers.

Actually they really like them. Find a bunch of them coughed up in the livewell every year

I think I read an article by NDGF that spoke of the difficulty of stocking crappie because everything likes to eat small crappie

No - even ice fishing. MN and ND.

It’s difficult to pick up a fried crappie filet without it crumbling apart.

Maybe mushy is wrong word. Tender to the point of ridiculousness is maybe better. Ha ha.

I agree they can have a mushy texture. I've seen similar things out of some sauger. When a guy is used to a firm "flake" of fish, it's a bit of a downer for sure. No clue how to fix it.

I discovered that I can't drag my fish around on a stringer all day in 90 degree temps.

Keeping them on ice is the cure apparently.

No more Neanderthal treatment of crappie for this guy.
