BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - A House bill that would have increased the fuel tax by three cents per gallon was unanimously killed in the Senate Friday. That’s because the House passed a bill increasing it by five cents instead.

The item was added to the NDDOT budget bill on Friday. Some lawmakers attempted to remove it, but 47 representatives voted to keep it in. Supporters say some increase will be needed to keep up with the higher costs to maintain and build roads.

“If you make a 120-mile trip and you get 20 miles a gallon, that means you burned six gallons. At five cents, that’s 30 cents. Not a lot of money, but put together, the state can do a lot of good in fixing these roads,” said Rep. Bernie Satrom, R-Jamestown.

An appropriations document states a five-cent increase would generate an additional $70 million in revenue.

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - State budget bills can be packed with different items and dollar values. House lawmakers spent several hours over the past two days discussing the State Department of Commerce budget and its various sections.

While the bill covers things such as tourism and workforce development programs, lawmakers clashed on items, including providing an additional $50 million towards the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. It would go towards operational expenses and must be privately matched by the organization.

“I think it’s a really generous gift and one we don’t take lightly using taxpayer dollars here, and we want to make sure we’re doing best by it,” said Matt Briney, chief communications and marketing officer for the library.

The bill also calls for $16 million to be used towards replacing state-owned, Chinese-built drones with ones built in America or other allied countries. It comes after a standalone bill calling for this failed in the Senate. Supporters say it’s a matter of national security.

“It’s important that we pass this because if Washington D.C. comes out, which they may next fall, and ban all DJI drones from here on out, it would be very tough to find replacements because there would be a run on the manufacturers,” said Rep. Mike Nathe, R-Bismarck.

The bill will be hashed out by a conference committee. Opponents of the bill say they’re concerned this bill may violate the state’s single-subject laws.

Fester are you trying to create more democrats? Your making us conservatives look stupid. No one said bloat should not be removed yet you keep harping about things your totally ignorant of.
Most bloat occurred when liberal politicians started DEI hiring. Also I have experienced contracting. The feds wanted to try it and $50k was just sitting there for the taking so I snapped it up. The company that got the bid had no idea how to hire someone with aquatic macro invertebrates taxonomy experience so I had to hire for the company. To pay those people the same money I had to pay twice as much because the company they worked for demanded half. I hired, I supervised, and I paid twice as much. If you believe the politician that tells you contracting saves the gov money, don't believe anything else he says either.
I have worked private and gov. Working for the gov can be good or bad, or even a total nightmare. I may have not received compensation for thousands of hours of work, but in the Bible Jesus says blessed is he who is persecuted for following me so I'm expecting much more than money or time off from my savior. To be honest I already received it with my family, friends, church, home, peace of mnd, and assurance of where I go when this is all over. I will never again see many of the people I worked with in the scientific community.
Try to think straight people an curb your hate. Clear minds will tell you who the real leeches are.
