Mother F'er!@!!!!.....Please elaborate? Any amount of compost added to garden bed will have negative impact? I just added 2-4 yards (2 heaping pickup loads) to my newly tilled garden. The Garden is 22' x 34' though. Will this amount of compost be bad? I got the compost from the city of Fargo. I never even thought of this. Damn it!!

the city of Fargo is really dropping the ball by not warning people - we called and complained years ago

sorry - but I am pretty certain that this is what you will see this summer - we sure did - BAD

took two years for that shit to get worked out of the soil by exchanging with new soil and time/sun

Did you swap out the soil or just keep adding? I was planning on putting 2 more loads in also.

Time to burn this bitch down!!

Any spray you spray your yard with causes a residue in the grass leaves. This residue might stay in the grass up to a year depending on weather conditions. Really bad juju for tomatoes.

we removed what we thought were hot spots (not very effective) and threw that on low spots (perfectly good for the lawn) and added good non-effected soil

if you can you might want to switch to focus on less sensitive plants this year and plant some sensitives just to see what the damage was.

we found out the hard way that "free compost" from cities is no longer of any use in gardens - due to the residual herbicides

I havent had any problems yet, I thought that crap was just for use in pastures, etc. Do people use it on their lawns? Was this in Bismarck? What good is compost if you cant grow anything with it?

I just saw your picture. I had something that affected my grapes for a while after I first planted them. Some plants did fine, others looked like they had a really bad nutrient deficiency, I bet it was the damn compost that caused the problems....

you have time to test it at least eh?

- - - Updated - - -

lots of "lawn/yard" products have residual effective herbacides

it really pisses me off that the cities don't have BIG SIGNS warning people

I'm sure it's somewhat luck of the draw on whose yard/ditch/golf course, etc. your compost came from (which section of the big composting tootsie rolls)

Yeah, I think I will definitely get it tested now. How long do the results usually take through the NDSU extension? At this point I already have all the seeds and mostly finished the irrigation. It's our first year with a garden so I wasn't expecting to have a stand at the farmers market, but didn't want a kick in the sack to start with.

I'd throw some seeds in that soil and see how they sprout/grow. We did not get ours officially tested - showed the NDSU folks the leaves, talked to some people at the city, etc. that were all like "what... huh?... hard to say" etc.

growth pattern and poor growth/yield was exact match for residuals - and matched no known diseases - symptoms tapered off over a three year period

dude - I think you got sack-kicked - I am crossing my fingers you did not - you never know but I hope not

Usually roundup isn't an issue, supposed to become inert after contact with soil. Its the broad leaf herbicides that cause the issue................... Guy, its what we call cupping of the leaves. Its what herbicides do in small amounts to plants.

They have a lot of medicinal uses and health benefits just like Marijuana. Good for bees, produce oxygen keeps my lawn green too. so many positive to them why all the hatred towards an innocent pretty yellow wild flower?

I did the compost thing from the city of bismarck ruined my garden for the year. Next year I sprayed with milestone and then got a heavy rain. Seems the milestone can leach into surrounding areas. Killed all my tomatoes, now I just use pre emergent (we have sandburs bad in our neighborhood) and spot spray for dandelions with ortho.

I am lucky enough to have an endless supply of leaves and places to build compost piles. Thus I have not used any compost from the bismarck landfill for several years. However I did use lots of it long ago. Never had a single problem.

I do know for a fact that landscapers in Bismarck are using it. Last summer it was spread over a entire lawn where I work. It is green as can be now. Sod was put over it and it is terrific. It's possible that the Bismarck compost has been cooking longer and killed the herbicides.

Better than the MF'n red root pig weed that comes later, Milestone in the fall after a good hard frost and you'll be amazed at how many dandelions you won't have along with all kinds of other weeds.

best time to spray is like you said. After the hard frost, the plant wants to suck up some moisture and again if you have the weed killer down, it gets sucked up and dies!!

We have canadian thistle with some leafy spurge to the north of us in a huge empty lot (lots actually). That shit blows in from the prevailing northwest winds. We use milestone and 2-4 D to control leafy spurge and Canadian thistle in our CRP so may have to give this a test in town. (SHHHHHHH)!! We live in Mandan and the pricks that own the lots to the north of us live in FARGO. City doesn't work with us much to control the NOXIOUS weeds so may take it upon myself. They are supposed to mow at least once a month or after 6" of growth. Think the city mowed it once last year...Bastages

Anyone else like to let the boulevard weeds grow into weed patches because of all the salt, sand and gravel the city pushes up into the grass during the winter? Like to put it into cement or gravel or pavers but that isn't allowed either. Bastages
