Well after all the dust settled from this weekends 4th of July activities and having dead silence on our drive home from the lake I started to count in my head how many dogs were up at the cabin.. After going through the count twice, I was over 10 when you factor in our dogs and then the neighbors entourage. After having the leash law enforcement pushed a little by the cabin association (apparently there was 2 bite incidents last year), it occurred to me how much easier it would be if a person could leave at home for the weekend. That way they wouldn't be sitting in a kennel for hours at a time, and I wouldn't have to hear my wife complain about having to haul the dogs every weekend.

Do any of you guys have a large set-up to where you feel comfortable leaving your critters at home for a day or two? Thought about fencing part of the yard but it would make mowing a pain in the arse.

We live on 50+ acres out in the country with no neighbors within miles. The nearest boarding kennel is 30miles.

my dog loves going to the lake more than anyone else in my family, I would feel pretty bad leaving him behind.

Yup, my pooch sat chained to my 5th wheel for a majority of the weekend.

I let him run when I get out of the campground area, and also let him catch the stick in the lake for about an hour, otherwise he just lays next to the camper waiting for some kid to come by and rub his head.

Not real fun for him I am sure, but he is an absolute pain in the ass when in the boat.

Yeah, this is the same for me. They are attention whores! The second I brought them home and let the out they were in heaven.

My dogs love being at the lake too, but they also don't like having to sit in a kennel, and I don't like leaving them in the kennel. Yeah, they get out and swim for an hour or so but I still think they would rather be at home barking at whatever makes noise around the house. It would also cut out the two kennels I have to haul in the hatch on the way up!

Our dogs have always loved the lake…of course they do not have to be tied up or kenneled either. When we had our older lab she knew the boundaries and never wondered off. Our new younger lab is pretty good but we still have a zapper collar on her…just so she knows where she can go. Although all of our neighbors have dogs and they all get along.
I do see what you’re saying though…I know dogs love the company and pack mentality but how much enjoyment is it for them if they are kenneled the whole time…if they are used to it then no big deal. Ours loves her kennel but only for a few hours at a time and that’s only when all of us are out in the boat.

My other house I had a fenced run with a dog door in the garage wall leading into the dog house. I could leave the dog a few days if I had to. Out current house orientation would not work to have a run off the garage and I miss it terribly.

This was what I was thinking of doing but in a larger scale. Also, I'd like to have the inside of the "run" mostly grass. That way the dogs can do their business on what they're use too, I'm afraid if we have a slab of concrete it would mess with their routine and they might be more apt to going in the house.

I basically have the same set up as MM. Our dog is getting old and doesn't do much besides lay around and nap. He is fine in the garage for a night. If for the whole weekend a neighbor usually goes over a couple times to check on him. Most of the time he comes with us though but with our sons hockey schedule as he is getting older the dog will be spending more time at home.

I've been getting pressure from the mrs. to get the fence done around the house so she doesn't have to let the dog out at noon all the time. I might just do the kennel run in the back and seize my referee funds that were confiscated.

I was saying perhaps your calls are incorrect due to lack of visual acuity in an attempted humorous manner.
