
Took these pics a couple years ago of some Collared doves we shot in the fall in an area by Devils Lake where they stay year around. They might stay, but life up here on the frozen tundra for them isn't easy. Most of them only had a few toes left.
half the doves walking around in Hawaii are missing toes and crap just like that
I've read it's from an avian type of pox/virus... related to leprosy

some people claim human hair and strings etc. Sounds like BS to me since lots of beaks are f'd up too in Hawaii

Quick correction about the feet deformities--it's actually not avian pox (this is rare)--but rather infection and amputation caused by fiber, thread, and especially human hair that becomes wound around the toes, cuts off blood circulation, and eventually kills the toes or feet. I'm a wild bird rehabilitator affiliated with Wild Bird Rehab Haven; we have caught and fixed thousands of these birds--i have "before and after" photos, if you're interested!
