Headed to Duluth for a week the middle of June. Would like to get out on a boat for a day and catch some fish. Anyone have any good charters they would recommend? What can a guy expect to catch that time of year?

Lake Trout are probably the most accessible that time of year, but salmon, rainbows, and browns can all be caught up there. Most of the other fish they have you can nab right here in ND. Haven't a clue about a charter as I would go other places to chase those fish that are much better than Duluth so I've never researched it or wet a line there. Good Luck and post pics.

Whatever you do make sure when you are talking to the charters on the phone to ask how "involved" in the fishing YOU will be. Ive heard stories like some dont let you handle fish or even set the hook, you get to reel it in and thats it. BS. Catching a giant laker would be pretty cool, and they have some big fish up there. Big walleyes as well.

Do some research on shore fishing as well. I have no clue as to when is the best time of year for it, but i know guys catch nice rainbows from shore at the mouth of creeks and in small harbors (north shore i think).

If you really want to get adventurous and have a day to kill drive over to Madeline island. You can have a boat take you out and kayak the apostle island caves. THAT was a hoot.

To shore fish the duluth area on Lake Superior tributaries themselves, you need to be a lawyer to read all the regulations, they are extremely protective over spawning habitat and what you can and cannot keep. If you fish any inland lakes, it's pretty straight forward.

In terms of charters: Happy Hooker charters are great, do NOT do the Hatteras Lake Superior guide (personal experience and talking to the group before us).

Send me a PM once we approach June I know folks along the shore, the north shore in June will produce mostly lakers referred to slicks as they are really oily but great table fare when smoked, one or two quality charters out of Duluth and a couple up the shore in two harbors I can have you research,I've fished every river from the lester in Duluth up to Grand Marias over the years for steelhead in the spring and salmon in the fall.Every small stream and river has been stocked with trout, mostly splake but natives rainbows and specs(brook trout) are abundant, some lake run brook trout or coasters run in the spring as well,my PB brookie is 26"s just over 3lbs,very colorful fish, but again in the spring, water temps regulate
spawning runs. You'll need a trout stamp in Minnesota, all lake superior tributary streams are one hook only,no trebles allowed. Also during the week we have a federal fish hatcheryopen@ the mouth of the French river just north of Duluthalong the scenic hwy, here you can get a free guide on stream fishing and stocking info, the folks working there are very helpful. But don't count on stream fishing in june, water will be to low unless you hike up stream and fish some hidden pools, again I can help there too but its top secret...j/k

Don't do it!!! Once you submit to the pull of sconiland your soul will be forever stained. Repent and turn from the path of destruction and azzhattery you are currently walking. Proclaim to the wilderness "Get thee behind me sconiland" and remain in the fold. Flee NOT from the promised land of ND to fish. Stay with us dear brother and fall not into temptation. For thine is the kingdom of great fishing, the power of the hookset, and the glory of a full stringer be yours if thow dost remain steadfast in ND. Now let us pray the rapala prayer..................AMEN!!!!

Short term licenses don't need a trout stamp in MN. You could also look at doing the fishing yourself. That time of year running stickbaits off planer boards near the surface will get Lakers, Cohos, and maybe a stray Walleye in Wisc. waters off of the town of Superior. Dipsy divers with spoons or stickbaits should also get fish. You are fishing the top 30 ft even if you are in a 120 ft of water. In MN water you need an MN license. Ditto for Wisc. GPS will have the line marked. You can also look into any charters going out of barkers Island in Superior.

Also take along a sweater or jacket. When the wind comes off the lake that time of year it can get chilly real quick.

Went to Duluth on family vacation stayed around two harbors. It was not as hell out and we were by a little swimming beach and wanted to go so my dad walked over there with us. We took our shirts off and ran in like the lakes at home. Holy crap is that water cold it was the middle of July and it felt like jumping in ice water. We u turned and ran back out dad got a good chuckle out of that.

Finally got out today our original trip was planned for Wednesday but got canceled do to 30 mph winds. I went with team crush outdoors. I was extremely happy first fish in the boat was a 27 inch eye. Caught on a planer board and a shallow diving stick bait in 100 feet of water. We ended with 8 Lakers and the one eye in 4 hours.

Neato.

but Did they make you use reels with drags backed off to the max so you had to crank and crank and crank to bring them in because they assume you are mentally dorked and don't know how to fish?

that's what they did to us. Never. Again.

- - - Updated - - -

We asked to increase drags and just reel in slowly but they refused. Grrrrrr

Nope never had that problem. We set the hook on most fish and got to mess with the drag if it was to loose.

If one were a crank addict like me in a single hook area; would you put it on the front or rear? I know trout like to chase and swipe short and have often thought of rigging a stinger about 4in long.
