Looking for a new e collar. I have a german short hair who hunts well. The only thing the collar needs to do is give a signal or light buzz when she starts to range too far. I don't want a beeper collar.

Any Suggestions?

Tritronic Sport 65 BPR G2

Mine is several years old. Very reliable. It is a beeper/locate. I don't run him with the beeper on (annoying) but I do turn it on to get his attention. Works well on winding days when your dog can't hear you. He thinks the beeper means come back. He knows what happens next if he isn't listening. Then I turn the beeper off when he is working in range. Simple push button.

And the loud beeper/locate is nice when your dog is on point in thick cover. My English Setter is fast and it is easy to lose him in cattails, tall grass etc. When he goes on point he won't come off calling to him even if you are ten yards from him. Get ready, push the beeper.

I've had a couple dt's over the years(15), not bad units but I love the Garmin delta series, up to three dogs, all dogs can be configured differently right on the hand held, great range and battery life, can also be set to just straight up bark collar also for around the yard if need be. Definetly worth a look, mine are the Delta Sport

If all you need to do is tone/buzz your dog once in a while there is no need to spend big bucks. I'm on my 10th year with my sport dog collar that i got for $99, half price at Scheels . My springer has never gotten out of range of it. I would have no problem buying another one of their collars. Maybe the sport hunter 825...or maybe the 1825 for a GSP;)

I have the 1825 and its awesome, but its also the only one I've ever had.

Good range, good battery life, quick charge up when it does die.

It has a ton of different configurations. I have all 3 tone, vibrate, and shock enabled on mine.

Low-Med-High levels with 8 shock levels each. The tone is nice for training/whistle training. Dont use vibrate much.

I'm also in the market and have been looking at the Dogtra Arc. Anyone have any experience with it? It was recommended to me along with the Sport Dog 1825 by a trainer

DO most of you guys running pointers use beeper collars or not?? I thought about getting one after this weekend, couple times the dog was on point and had no idea as I was hunting tall grass mixed with junipers - which made for locating the dog difficult..

Good buddy runs his with beep collars. It's nice for cattails, which is all we hunt.

But I've never particularly liked the beep. I bought a GPS collar last fall. Let's me know when a dog is on point, and I can key in on him ninja-style. The roosters don't know what hit them.

Interesting.. which collar did you go with and how does it inform you when the dog is on point??

I got to try out two types and settled on the SportDOG Tek 2.0. I didn't like the touchscreen of the Tri-Tronics Alpha. Plus I was bumping it constantly. The Tek 2.0 isn't perfect, either...has an issue where it'll freeze up when you try to power down and if you don't catch it your battery goes kaput. But otherwise it works great.

If your dogs go on point (or take a dump longer than a few seconds) the handheld unit either vibrates or beeps or both to let you know that the dog has stopped. Sometimes if the satellite signal isn't great you get a lot of false notifications, so I turned the volume way down because otherwise it will drive you nuts.

But I've never lost a dog! That was priority numero uno for me. Having a dog go on point in cattails (especially trained dogs who won't budge until the bird moves) is a scary thing when you're hunting in a big piece of cover. Plus I had a dog hit a snare two falls ago and decided from then on I wasn't hunting without a GPS collar.

Sounds interesting. Definitely had a few times last weekend when I wish the dog had a beeper collar - not a good feeling to not know where or if the dog maybe got into something..

I had one particular instance with traps as well last weekend - buddy thought he pulled all his conibears and happened to forgot one - luckily I knew what I what looking at and able to keep the dog away, but if someone else didn't know it could've ended badly.. Needless to say the trap was taken out of service..

I have a Garmin Alpha, it's the GPS version that tones the remote to let you know when your dog is on point. Basically, it lets you know your dog has stopped moving.

It's a good to great collar system, has a vibrate feature for communicating with the dog when you don't want to shock him. Only two negatives are, 1. the antenna on the collar is ridiculously long; and 2. the screen on the remote is plastic and you will absolutely want to put on a screen protector. I cut down a protective screen for a smartphone and that has served me well.

The cost of the system is not trivial either, about $600 for a single dog setup the last time I looked.

It's worth it though, I used the GPS feature on the collar to setup a perimeter around the yard to let me know when he leaves the area. After a few weeks of working with him, he no longer goes out onto the highway or over to the neighbor's place. Wish I could say the same about his fricking lab.

how well does the bark feature work? reviews are so-so. Would really like a dual purpose collar if they actually work well.

Haven't had a lot of use in the bark mode but when I have it's worked perfectly, had the handset just on kitchen counter and dog was in the fenced in yard, only draw back I've seen is it can only be on one dog at a time from what I've noticed which worked fine for my case.

I ended up buying the Delta Upland Xc. So far no complaints. Directions were not very clear on how to mute the beeper collar. I did figure it out luckily the last time out I never had to buzz the dog. She reacts very well to tone commands.
