I am unsure of exact location outside of the rumors but I heard was the Buffalo fence which is west of Skunk Bay about 3/4 mile. A week ago I find 6 inches there and as suggested already I took to the middle of lake to avoid shore travel.

This year froze late and between the tidal effects, natural current and warm shorelines due to lack of snow shielding sun the shore areas and structure underneath has left areas void of good ice.

Ice conditions are extremely sketchy. This is why I have zero desire to ice fish.

Yes, I like global warming but I like ice fishing this time of the year too. Most years I am just getting ready to start ice fishing hard this time of the year , There is still some ice season left but I'll be walking out. I can remember driving all over the lake on April fools day and just barely getting through without an extension on the auger.

My condolences go out to the friends and family of the victim. It can happen to the most experienced fisherman. The area between the bridge and pouch has some of the worst ice hazards on the lake from springs, pressure ridges, and strange currents. My bro dropped a wheeler in right next to shore coming around a pressure ridge several years ago around the buffalo fence. I had a friend of mine that was drilling by Independence Point years ago and ice was 30 inches deep and went 10 feet more out and in he went hand brother was able to rescue him. Another friend of mine has watched the current reverse during the night west to east back around from east to west. Some believe it is a moon effect. I also had a friend watch a guy sink a pickup across from reunion which the guy got out safely.
