That's a sad deal. Please be safe and drill lots of test holes on the way out. The 2 spots I fished this weekend I was the first one out and I drilled holes about every 20 yards right away.

Terrible, hate seeing these stories

I am too old and fat to be the early ice champion. I wait until I see others out with all their gear etc.

I am sure if I was to fall in my chance would be less than 50/50, and at this point I kind of enjoy being alive.

Sometimes you guys disappoint me with being daredevils just to brag I was out 400 yds on 2 in of ice and I caught so so many fish, even tho this didn't happen in ND yet. Don't play games with your life over stupid fish...use your head. Its bad news no matter who or where it is...I will not venture out on ice till its damn well froze over and that wait might be till the end of jan, I don't care, thats how I roll.

Me too. I won't drive on less than 18" with any truck.

I seen people go through twice over the years I swear people lose there minds when it comes to first ice. I don't drive on the ice anymore i go for the target heart rate and drag stuff out. I can tell you that the creek at sweetbair is not a place to drive this year the first snow we got pushed into the creek and froze.

Last time I drove on lake ice I was behind a Ford double cab f250 pulling a home made 20 ft fish house. I had a 92 Mazda pickup and I still didn't feel safe.

I said this two weeks ago, and I love catching fish as much as any person on this site.

In the fall, many on here whine about getting out on the ice, while I'm still wading (and catching nice big fat fish). Why rush the season?

This guy that fell through the ice (and I know it wasn't here, and it wasn't recently) must have thought he'd be perfectly safe. No worries, right? Then he goes through, and (apparently doesn't even come up once) it's all over. Never see his family again. No saying goodbye. No more anything.

I know we are all bulletproof here in ND, and I know that nothing bad will ever happen to us. I know that we're all smarter than blue-platers. But this is why they call it an accident.

Think just a little bit. Are those first few fish really worth it?

I hope to not see any tributes this fall, to friends that died too soon.

I fell through once. Was only up to my waist because I was in shallow water luckily. 2 ft of ice on the rest of the lake but where I walked it wasn't safe. To make things worse it was about -20 that day with the wind chill. As soon as I managed to get myself out my pants were instantly frozen. Jumped right in the pickup and headed home with the heater on full blast the whole way. Didn't stop shivering until I got in the hot bath tub. My experience wasn't even that bad because I only went into my waist but it is something I never want to experience again. There is no such thing as safe ice. Always treat it with caution.

I haven't been in a rush due to the snow. I hate snow covered ice. Early ice that has no snow on it can be pretty readable. Snow covered early ice makes me less than excited.

Haven't fallen in but I've been on stupidly thin ice before. Had to try out the new auger. Dumb.

Last march a buddy and I spent the night in his big fish house up at Skunk bay, we had terrible luck that day and evening with 3 fish caught 1 keeper, then fished till noon or so the next day packed up and left. The very spot we were fishing about 100 yards further west of there took the life of a guy we knew when his 4 wheeler busted through. 4 guys ended up in the water, 3 guys made it out. Damn tragedy that I am reminded of every time I step on the ice.

I love slush pockets! When you unexpectedly drive into one you have the "oh shit, this is it, we're going in" feeling and then you drive out the other side and are immediately relieved until you fall into the next one 100 yards later. It just cant be matched.
