Are you kidding me, who in their right mind (if they had one) would put a permanent fish house on the ice already?

A permanent-style fish house broke through the ice on Pipestem Reservoir this week as seen Thursday near the Parkhurst area. Several factors helped weaken ice on the lake including temperatures and wind. John M. Steiner / The Sun

An ice house went into the water at Pipestem Dam earlier this week, according to Bob Martin, dam manager for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

The ice house had been placed on the ice near the Parkhurst boat ramp and broke through Wednesday or Thursday.
Martin said the lake was completely iced over last weekend but wind action, higher temperatures and releases from the dam caused some areas of ice to break up, resulting in open water in parts of the lake. The same actions likely weakened the ice in other parts of the lake including where the ice house had been placed.
B.J. Kratz, district fisheries supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said there is no set date when ice houses can be placed on the ice.
"It's up to the individual to use common sense," he said.
Kratz said he had heard reports of ice about 4 inches thick on Pipestem last weekend.
"The bad thing is you might have 4 inches in one place and 1 inch in another," he said. "This early in the season the ice is very inconsistent."
Kratz said it is up to the owner of the fish house to remove it from the lake even if it has fallen through.
Martin said releases from Pipestem Dam are at 13 cubic feet per second and will likely stay at that level through the winter. Water releases from the dam can contribute to instability in the ice on the lake.
"We're matching the inflows from springs and other sources," he said.
Much of the southern portion of the lake behind Jamestown Dam remains open although no water is being released, Kratz said.
Kratz said it is very early in the ice fishing season but anglers need to use caution on the ice at all times.
"There is no such thing as safe ice," he said.

This could be the perfect example of a Darwin Award, (Darwinism). Here's the story, I checked and there was maybe 3-4 inches of ice at best, the forecast is for sunny skies next couple of days and temps in the 30's to 40's and I am putting my HEAVY permeant ice house on that THICK ice and you know what the HELL could go wrong. I seldom belittle people but this one is just to easy and needed. I am glad no life was lost but sometimes think its hard to feel sorry if it had happen. These are the type of idiots that get more legislation like no houses on ice until at least Dec 31st and must be off by Jan 15th because of the stupidity. dukgnfsn

I knew him when I seen him at wildlife events etc, and I knee his last name at one time, but I can't remember his name now. He went through up by the old boat club bay.

Edit: Yes I think his name was Darin. The few times I talked with him he was reasonable about most things, but he sure liked to beat everyone on the ice. There were a number of guys sort of competing I think. One of them was on skis one year just east of my house.

In the spring some guy stretch an extension ladder from shore to the ice to get out on the ice.

One thing some people don't account for is the sun reflecting off the house and melting the ice on a warm sunny day.

I feel bad for people who have to go through terrible things in life that are beyond their control. People who are harmed physically/mentally/financially etc. out of pure stupidity get no sympathy from me. I hope his auger, vex and all his other shit was in there too. Maybe he’ll learn something then. Maybe.
