Planted in the mud, then a major hail storm, then no rain for last few weeks for brassica and then a ton of weeds to content with but it's doing better than I thought.
First picture of deer (hard horns) is from last year, then sheds off of him as found the next morning after dropping and then a picture of him this year.
Now four years of pictures. Son and I did talk about letting him breed one more season and maybe even one more shed season and harvest next year. As I was thinking I have done this with 7 deer and the neighbors have fair better than us. So he will decide as he has spent countless hours with this deer from finding him, taking pictures and just enjoying.
For me I hope one or two of my old friends from the previous year come to visit with me so I to can decide.
the whitetail deer is a treat to see and talk to and this four point buck makes it even greater.

Impressive! Nice work DB. Enjoy your input.

Do you mind me asking what general part of the state? SE? NW?

Kill him let his offspring do the breeding, before they all go to your neighbors land and get shot

I had the same problem with my brassica-mix plot. I hit the timing perfect with the rain the end of July but the pigeon grass came through with a vengeance!

On a side note, I don't think I would be able to let him pass at 30yds with the bow in my hand! He's getting close to the top of his peak. I'd put him at 5.5yrs. Either way beautiful buck, awesome character. Hope you guys get him!

Site is in the better part of the state as far as soil and moisture goes.
Guess I never thought of his offspring doing some breeding and also his dad/mother which I am sure are long gone. Deer must be in the 6-7 years of age. During that time I have no ideal but if 20 does a year for 5 years would give him 100 kids and maybe 25 are still alive today with maybe five of them bucks. However the doe is half of the fawn. no/yes.
This is probably one of the first bigger bucks that we have not name but after the time spent with him there is a desirer to let him live. He has given us a lot.
Four pointer with additional points so not the high scoring deer net wise, has grown some each year and this year did put out a g4 but he must be at his prime. We estimate (as we have his last year's horns) main four point frame in the mid 160 with a not-typical in the mid 170 and a typical maybe 150. But great character in our humble opinion and in my life would rate him number one for that. Would like to see some of that pasted on and I am sure he has. It is really once in a lifetime deer for us in North Dakota to bow harvest as it would be for my son. For me at 71 it really is once in a life time. My days are number and why I waited until 15 years ago to get a bow, I just plain blew it. So I have wish him the best. db

ummm... yep. i think you put him out of his misery. seems to be suffering a bit too much. although, it would be interesting to see him next year and find out if he has recovered.

Yep, if you get a chance at this buck, take him before the neighbors get him or he gets poached. You will not regret looking at him on the wall after!!

p.s. Your foodplot looks better than mine.

And it's not just because it has a dandy deer in it.

DSCN8768.jpgSo I got this 1.8 acres I bought in the late 90s. Have been developing this spot and it has turn into a deer sanctuary instead of a hunting spot. Expanded into the neighbor's waste land somewhat. Three spots with about 1.5 acres of food. Planted countless types of trees, flowers, corn, soybeans, winter peas, winter oats, brassicas, clover, alfalfa and one can continue on with the count. Try every deer supplement made.
A week ago I find this blind on the northwest edge of my food plot of 1.8 acres plus. New neighbor rented this land next to me and this blind is at the end of my food plot by less than 100 yards.
Been told there are a number of people who intend to hunt from this blind which is about 200 yards north of my tower or less than 100 yards from the plot.
Been told it is no big deal and I guess the reason I wrote about this is to me, it is a big deal and just needed to talk to someone. db-2

I understand your frustration and its a tough pill to swallow, however if they have permission to be there:;:huh.. Maybe you could rent the land next year.. Ive been on the opposite side of this and had adjacent landowner try run me off of land that i had permission to hunt, so can see both sides..

It should fuel you to want to sit longer and more often, to harvest the big buck before the outsiders do. Sucks regardless tho... but so goes the world!

yes legally they can be there so I guess I will be right next to them every day going forward. That should make it interesting. Hope the bullets do not fly by me as I am sure they are unwilling to share with me.

But when the renters have countless acres to hunt why would they put a stand next to me when I have done all this work and the only thing they did was put the blind up? We all know the answer. Yes not the first to have experience this.

I have seen when another person put countless hours and expense into a deer haven on 1140 acres over many years. Neighbors were upset as he had all the deer in their mind instead of developing their spot. So they put corn down on the other side and sat in their vehicle to shoot the deer and then pick up the corn after the deer were harvested. And then everybody got on the bandwagon.

Now at this point I am defeated and have no interest in going forward. My new bow is finally coming in on Thursday that I order in September. For now it will remain in the box. At this point I prefer the spot go to weeds next year and look for a new spot. And I do have new spots to work on for next summer.

I just would of thought there would be more respect between hunters but I guess not.

So it has help to write this and I will get over it but will not accept it. I decided in 95 to have the deer come to me instead of chasing them around. They came and then came the names for each one, then came the lack of desire to kill anymore. So yes I will start over in a new spot and maybe I can get on the bandwagon over getting rid of baiting. By themselves food plots do work. db-2

Feel for you DB as i have been down that trail myself many times. Last few years on the farm i prefered to shoot them with the camera as prefered to have them leaving their genes rather than harvesting them. Guess when one gets old we would rather have them live than shooting them. Enjoyed many hours watching them and collecting the horns after being shed. Had boxes and boxes full of them.
Good luck buddy!

Do you own the food plot and the blind is on the adjacent property?

Own the plot and land is adjacent own by a person in eastern canada. Previous renter did not work out so new renter. Local native who once he had this chance took advantage as the deer I have shown is one of a few.

but as brokenback stated ones thoughts do change as we age. No longer does the million dollars (did not come close even) seem important or having the largest deer. There are more important things in life.
So I will go up and sit on my land 50 yards Away and coyote hunt every night no matter if there is a coyote or not. Take my m1 or 30-30 as long as it is a 30 caliber.
imagejpeg

But did move cameras to a older plot we have. Son called and already had 90 hits on phone from camera. One is nice but again this is not the issue.
there is a lot more but again I do feel better by sharing and will visit more later. Thanks brokenback and others. Means a lot. Db-2

Db, yes some hunters don't have any respect for others and it sucks big time. If it were me, I would spend the money on a ground blind and put it right on the property line right by his (on your land of course) and just sit there just to piss them off. ;:;rofl You can bet if he gets the chance they will shoot a deer on your property if their blind is close enough to your land.

If it was me, I'd block the view of the plot with tree tops and other brush. Shouldn't take more than a few hours to drag enough brush to do the job. Then I'd put a blind right in front of theirs facing them with a camera inside. When you get a hit on the camera and see someone hunting, go join'em. Talk about the weather and other pertinent topics. Bring a Kazoo and serenade'em. LOTS of fun to be had if you don't care if you get a deer. Good Luck!!!

No future deer to be harvested at this plot this year as it now stands. Do have an old blind to put up and did not think of putting camera that will tell me if they are there or not at the moment. And a lot of fun can be had but.

Maybe in the end would be better to walk, put this spot out of mind and focus on a happy place as we do have them places to go to.Just hard to accept for now and the desire is to fight back.

In the end I know it is not worth it as my son has told me. He is talking with youth and I am thinking with age. Day by day to see what comes of this. Concern comes with what could happen and I want to see another year. Db

This is more how I would respond to the situation. I would set my blind as close as I could to them, hell might not even use a blind just pace the fence. I am sure they have all intentions to harvest a deer grazing in your plot if your not around. I know I might get berated here but I think rifle hunting bucks brings out the demon in people. You could take the most ethical hunter and put him face to face with a big buck and a switch is flipped. Of course this isnt all but it is definitely some. I love hunting, but man do I dislike rifle season. Each year I wonder why I actually go but then my kids just love deer sausage way to much not to. Just my 2 cents.
