I bought one. Weight between 280-300lbs. Kill, chill, and halved for $150. Not thinking that's a bad deal at all. I enjoy doing the butchering. Picking it up on Monday

I would buy a pig if I knew someone that has a band saw and setup to just cut up each half for me. I would definitely pay the butcher for his time. Heck I would sit there and as he cut, I would back the meat into my coolers to take home and wrap it, pack it or vacuum seal. I would just want the ribs to smoke, chops, loin and a couple of hams to brine and smoke and pork belly to cut some bacon. The rest I would grind up and make some pork sausage and save some to mix with venison this fall. I don't need anything from the head or hock.

I've been to a number of whole hog BBQ and I head straight for the head.

The Sundale colony north of Milnor.

I think a hand held meat saw is all a guy needs when only doing a couple three head of hogs. Thats what im using anyways.

for those doing more than a few head, a cheap electric "disposable" chainsaw and use mineral oil for chain lube for splitting the carcass in half. beats working a meat saw.

I use my battery reciprocating saw for deer pelvis, legs, neck and ribs.

I heard from a pretty good source that last week a farmer from eastern SD brought a load of hogs to market in western SD. Butcher hogs sold for $90 a head. They bought 6. The sale was successful for this farmer so he was going to bring another load this week. Four weeks ago this same person told me they bought butcher hogs for $275 per head. She told me to call your local sales barn to check for availability and price.

You know damn good and well you aren't going to get these butchered for you during this time. Do it yourself or find a deer hunter friend who is set up for it. Google on how to butcher a hog. I've seen the full video. Piece of cake if you or your deer hunting buddy has the setup.

good luck.

Had a chance last week to buy in the Bismarck area for $ 40.00 each but have no time or place to butcher now.

How long can pork be in the freezer before the taste starts going down hill? I recall hearing 4 to 6 months but don't know how true

I'm with you on the four to six months as i had read somewhere a long time ago that it was 6 months max for pork. Now if you vac seal it or some of it that you may expect to go in the freezer longer than 6 months, you may be ok with that. It's the pork fat that will go rancid on you.
