Why is it just a few weeks ago the sound of the English House Sparrows actually making bird sounds was enough to get my attention yet tonight well draining water from the ss pipsqueak I just wrote off the cacophony of a dozen Killdeer, hundreds of Starlings and a couple great blue herons duking it out for supremacy of the lake as just standard background noise? I mean seriously I'm not sure if I have heard any of those three species before tonight yet since it's 65 degrees out today in my mind its normal so it just wrote it off as nothing new go about your business. Man living in a state that is about as cold as you will find in the lower 48 outside of the mountains yet also holds the distinction of coming in fifth of states record high temperatures after the four states that are from the desert Southwest it really screwes with a guy's perspective on what is normal! But damn does it give us the best seats in the house to see just how great spring can truly feel!

Now Bismarck is great for Spring but I have to admit I definitely do miss being in Grand Forks on the first truly warm day of spring as the girls at UND brought the twins out for their first walk of the year.....damn now that was a spring moment no man wrote off as just another day!!!:;:cheers

I've thought about getting another degree. Don't have to pay back student loans if I'm always a student.

As for the birds, ornithology was one of my favorite classes in undergrad. I usually have my Birds of North America guide with me.

First statements is one of the great truths in life and the second although I don't have any of those books is one of the reasons why I love my folks deck in the spring time because it's like Nature's Air Show. You just never know what will show up in an area with big yards to attract those birds and large amounts of old trees to attract another group and a nice little Lake to round off the avian trifecta of pretty much who the hell knows what the hell you're going to see next. Although I must say the osprey migration is still my favorite.....damn can they put on a show! Didn't take this pic but it came from the folks yard two Springs ago.....I'm not sure if fish can show emotion but is it just me or is the look on that bluegills face the the same look i saw on the faces of the Democrats on election night as it dawned on them that they did not see that particular day ending in that particular fashion!

Spring is here, honkers are fighting and making all sorts of racket/music to establish territory on the frozen ponds . Yesterday morning the resident fox pranced through the yard proud as a peacock with a muskrat in his mouth , This morning a bald eagle sat in a tree in the yard that the fox walked under, possibly waiting for the fox to fetch him another muskrat ? Yesterday afternoon I walked over 3' of snow to get to a shed and I saw a butterfl , Monarch looking but smaller with more orange . He must of wanted company because he followed me up to the house and when I went to another shed he followed me over there . Kinda crazy seeing a butterfly with this much snow on the ground.

Sawyer,
On Winnipeg last weekend there were geese honking, bald eagles flying around and tons of crows. There were even seagulls eating on the trillions of walleye eggs and carcasses on the ice from the commercial guys.

For me the sounds of meadowlarks, red-winged blackbirds, and killdeer are the sound of summer. I'm fortunate enough to be able to hear all of those every day even though I live in Bismarck.

A morning dove perched outside your bedroom window saying good morning to all within ear shot for several hours on a Saturday morning, after a Friday evening of over indulging on whiskey, and lewd women is about the worst GD sound a hung-over sob can hear...
