Interesting read! When the talk turns to ethics then it goes south fast.
To me Ethics is an individual personal thing and varies among each beliefs.

I thought it was and still is a big joke when ND created an Ethics Commission.
JMHO.

What's the worst that could happen? You wound an animal, it suffers and dies a more painful death. Coyotes, eagles and other predators feast. Not that big of a deal to me just try your best not to let it happen.

I see this point but struggle with it. Mother Nature is a b word but I feel there is a stark difference is us a predators and a coyote. Watching as deer get eaten alive in a weakened state isn’t fun. Worse when my bullet put them in that state. We all make bad shots at some point and have to reckon with it. But I’m going to do my best to prevent it. With technology that can be purchased today, many folks buy over their abilities. Heck my rifle is cheap and is way better than me!

The other thing that bothers me a bit is the attitude that the type of critter matters in this discussion. Wound a coyote at 1500? Whatever. Three whitetail does? Not a big deal. But wound a big elk and people get pissed. I hold them in the same regard when it comes to trying to make a clean kill. I had a buddy in SD wound two bulls last season in archery season and kill a third. Sad with a damn near lifetime tag that so many strive for.

We all have our own hierarchy of animal worth. For example, for me Elk > Antelpe

My longest shot was slightly over 400 yards. Many years ago laying down in the snow behind a old fence line that had a small dirt mound to rest the rifle on. Very nice Whitetail Buck. Typical heart shot. Saw the blood spot and he did a big jump ran about 10 yards and then down.

If i want to go hike around and watch the the sun set i can do that any time i want. If i am going hunting my main purpose is to kill some thing.
If you don't kill something, is the hunt a failure?

Yes because thats what the goal is of hunting. Just going out and hiking around or laying in a corn field waiting for ducks that never show up isnt successful even the dog knows when its going bad and no birds are coming. With that i dont have to be the one shooting the birds as long as some die for me to run my dog. Now maybe some one who lives in the city gets something out of nature hiking but when i live in it and see it every day its nothing really new. The first few times going elk hunting the scenery was cool but after that with all the time and money being invested actually shooting an elk beat the hell out of all the sunset pictures from the year before. Probably why i wont go elk hunting again i accomplished that goal and its not worth the time I have to devote to it to be successful. This is all for me if some one is happy going out and not killing any thing more power to them just not how i am wired.
