I wonder what the total death toll will be once all is said and done with this one!
Some of those areas look totally destroyed. Sure hope people heeded the warnings but know many didn't because of one reason or another. I get it that some want to stay behind but staying behind to stick it out may have been fatal in this case. What a mess. Prayers to that region!

YOu can see who paid the big bucks to build some of those homes. Most are shredded but some of em dont have a damn thing wrong with em. Engineering we can build em -- wonder what it would take with some of them -- 200 hundo mph?

Crazy how fast that storm changed. My uncle has friends in Pensacola that he had been talking to about when they pack up and leave. They said Cat 2 and they're out. As of saturday there was a tropical storm, Monday it was a Cat 1 headed for them. Tuesday morning it was a Cat 2 and still headed for them. All of a sudden its 100 miles away and a Cat 4 and everything is destroyed. I think I'll quit bitching about blizzards

Buildings that survived are probably newer construction (post Andrew). Florida changed building codes based on damage observations in Homestead. They have been changing the codes after seeing how previous changes have held up to real world conditions. That part of Florida is pretty flat so storm surge probably went pretty far inland. Last hurricane in that region pushed storm surge all the way up past I 10. CHeck it out on google earth to see how far that is from the ocean. It will be better than two decades before this area recovers. Hopefully they will not see another storm for many decades after that.
