Been debating on purchasing a hard sided case for quite some time now. Been back and forth in between the Otter rod Case and the heavy duty Frabill one. The ice fishing innovation cases are really cool but not sure there would be enough rod storage for me. So after much research I discovered Plano must obviously make the Frabill model. Really enjoy this case because it seems like you can fit more rods than the Otter. Anyways I found the Plano brand online, which is technically a tactical gun case with pluckable foam. I purchased the 36in model as I didn't want the extra six inches of the 42in model, which I could have made a mistake but oh well. I've been wondering if anyone else has been using the Plano model as opposed to the more expensive Frabill or Otter.

I use the 36" Plano case for my rods. So far so good. I still break down the reel handles which I don't care for so my next project is to create a foam insert similar to the IFI case.

That looks like it would be worth a try over the Otter or Scheels case. I bought the red/black Scheels case for half price ($40). I think for that price it is a decent case, its what i use when i'm not on my ATV. I also have the Otter case that attaches to my otter box on my ATV, for that it is a must have and awesome, but for just a stand alone case i probably wouldn't buy it. Its a little to shallow and they really need to get rid of that giant molded handle and put some sort of flush flip handle. The otter is indestructible though.

I have a "tube sleeve" type rod case. I regret buying it every time I use it.

I too debated buying a hard case for quite some time. I kept breaking rod tips off in my soft case. My wife had heard enough bitching from me and went and bought me the frabil case. I have not gotten to use it yet other than getting all my rods lined up in it. Seems extremely well made and heavy duty.

I have a Frabil heavy duty ice rod locker and use it pretty regularly, no broken tips and lines don't tangle blowing around in the bucket. but I do break down the handles also when using, if I took out a layer of foam I probably wouldn't have to but they don't move now as is. I may have to consider trying this and can probably get away with not breaking down the handles. rodcase.png

I got my Scheels one half price as well earlier this season ($40) and I love it. I can fit 8 combos in it.

I picked up the Frabill case to make sure my rods were safe when we go to Winnipeg. Have used it already and I really like it. It is heavy duty and stores my 42" rod. I also like that I can cut out some of the foam to store the rods and tackle boxes. I currently have it set up to put the tackle boxes in below the rods in the foam. I think next is to cut out some spaces for the reels so I can easily close the top.

I have a Scheels hard side rod box. Only bad part is having to break down the handles.

I've had the plano case for a couple years, very tough and can fit 42 inch rods. Mainly bought for lake winnipeg. I break the handles down for a better fit.

A guy would think the Plano case is pretty similar to the Frabill one knowing that Plano makes/ owns Frabill. I would go with the Plano because it is cheaper. I haven't made the switch because I already have 3 tube cases already and haven't had any issues yet!

As far as I can see they are the same, when I got my plano it was a gun case. When I saw the frabill this winter I was glad I got mine a little cheaper.

I have the heavy duty frabill and refer to it as the Samsonite luggage, they are huge. I haven't broke a rod yet in it, and it'll handle my 36" rods. Only downfall is some of the bigger reels have to have the handles broke down. Plus schools in Bismarck had them on sale for 50 a couple weeks ago and that sweetened the deal.

The outfitters in Minot has the Plano tactical cases on sale. I think they were 40 something. Got one to make into a hd ice rod case!
