Cant recall seeing a rooster's beck on a goin away flush, scatter gun with a slight 60/40 poi for goin away and rising up shot gets the job done, gets the blood goin as well... frankly I enjoy my new pup work and his excitement more than taking a bird these days, didn't take long to figure out his body language on hot sent, his tail tells the story.
When dead away I either concentrate on one wing or visualize blowing the hackle off it's back. Fed 1 3/8, 6's with a 4 as the third. Model 12 29in bbl FC. In my older years I'm beginning to wonder if the hell fire only has measurable benefit in my mind...Standard high brass Super X hit with essentially the same energy at 40ds just get there a bit slower.

Best tactic I used for late season spooky roosters was to find small potholes in corn/soybean fields that were 50 or so yards across that were 100 to 200 yds off the road. Park 400 or so yards down the road, leash up ole Herc, and sneak in on that cover like there was a 300 inch whitetail in there. Once I got to the edge of the cover, I'd let Herc off the line and get ready. Most birds hit the air by the time Herc made his third jump through the cover, but it didn't matter as they were in range when I let Herc go. I sure miss that dog. Quiet is the name of the game. Nothing will send late season survivors packing faster than a slamming car door, a racking gun, or the sound of the human voice. Late season was my favorite part of the whole shebang. Stay Warm Fellas.

Hah , I have a small slough where I hunt on a min-maintence road. You can shoot across it into a pasture . Its the one time I am not quiet , its above your head so you cant walk it . I pull up slowly get out get the gun ready and slam the door . It explodes . Last Saturday only needed 2 so I took those and about another 10 came out . All in range .
