Anyone one else think this rule is kind of stupid? This year we could leave houses on and be fine after that date. Some years they need to be off by the end of February. I guess most people maybe don't have common sense anymore and they need that date. Would be nice to keep the big house set up for a little while longer given the good ice conditions we have yet.

No one said you cant use them. You just cant leave them unattended. And IMO with how fast the weather and ice can change this time of year, you have no common sense if you left your house out there if there was no March 15th rule.

Yep, far too many pieces of fish structure already exist because of people ignoring this law, and the law of common sense (I hate that phrase though).

I would expect that response from you. I live 8 miles from the lake. I can get it off if I need to. Apparently we need a law cause people can't take responsibility for their property. I really want to spend close to an hour every day setting up a house. Oh well. I guess most people like stupid laws. If your house sinks, fine the shit out of the person. Don't punish responsible people who can take care of their stuff.

Last year it was 72 and 73 degrees on March 13th, 14th.
And I was on the river in a boat. What's your point? That is really what I was getting at. In North Dakota there is no hard date ice is safe and not safe.

Common sense is becoming a thing of the past! :;:cheers

In some ways, that's a good thing. Remember, "common" sense once told everyone that if they sailed west from Europe that they would fall off the planet. It was Christopher Columbus' uncommon sense that led him to venture out where others said he would never return.

I am planning one more trip out this weekend but am now wondering if I need to revisite the common sense encyclopedia. I know it will be fine getting on on Friday and plan on keeping a close eye on things to get off on sunday or earlier if needed. This topic just got me thinking what others call there cut off temp, time, condition ect? What does "common sense" really mean when you are talking about driving a full size truck with a wheel house onto a layer of ice?

Pull it to shore and pull it out again. Not hard. Good rule in my book. We don't need a big weather change to create an unneeded emergency, IMO.

When you question if you should be out there or not, that's when you should get off. Most areas of the state, the main sheets of ice will be fine yet this weekend.

March 15 seems like on an average the ice seems to get soft and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately this law doesn't cater to people with close lake access like you want it to but I am sure it has saved hundreds of people over the years from being in danger because they wanted a couple more days of permanent fishing. At least they don't have a date when you can put permanent icehouses on.
