It has been 47 years since I left that conflict in SE Asia
A welcome home, thank you is not expected, needed or requested. It happen a long time ago. The right to have served and the experience has been thanks enough. Not all have had that opportunity.
But I do ask for a moment of reflection.
For me, I reflect on a moment 47 years ago, lying next to a soldier who I knew was going home earlier. I knew him for but a brief moment of time and with time I no longer remember his name.
Soon it would be day light and someone will come to help him start his trip home. In a few hours I knew his parents would find out their son was coming home. Soon there would be the sermons made with all the tears and grief by his family. The speech made to honor his service, his commitment to his country and the giving of all. For me, a conflict that had little meaning or purpose today but was the right and honorable thing to do as countless others before me did.
For those who feel the need to protest this country, to protest he is not our president, for those who hide the lawless in their sanctuary towns, for those who feel the need to protest our law enforcement, for those whose whole life has been to take and not give and for those who do not understand the giving of ones life for this country, please take a moment to reflect on those who did give, and those who gave their all.
