Looks like Montana is cutting its nonresident deer tags starting next year. I've hunted in region 7 many times for deer, but haven't the past 5 years or so. That area already had a lot of NR hunters and then add in EHD, you could see the herds get smaller and smaller year after year. With the reduction in revenue, one has to wonder if they will up tag prices again. Still a fun hunt though and hopefully can get back out there again.

After the deer numbers we saw this year ND should do the same!! In fact, they should cut all the tags IMO. At least for a while.
I agree, ten years ago I would take youth hunters out on a section of land. About 200 acres farm land. And 200 acres hay ground and rest CRP. The house sets just about in the center of the section. Ten yrs ago the young hunters wouldn't set for no more than 30 mins and shoot there deer. And it was like that for years. The last two years there has not been a deer shot. We set in a old abandoned house in the 2nd story and can glass lots of land. Between that land we hunt and a half section to the north. Everything is farmed ditch to ditch. No trees anymore and very few sloughs.

I realize that cutting ND deer tags hurts the G & F revenue, but that dept is there to keep & care for our resources. Yes, it's a tough balancing game, but that's their duties.
Drop the # of tags, mainly the doe tags, and go from there.
I saw very few deer this season, including talking with lots of other hunters that said the same thing. There was also very few hunters in the field. Are we losing a very important tradition? Why:
People are not enjoying the hassle of getting drawn, the expense of the prep & actual hunting, and then trying to find huntable land/habitat. (dump electronic posting asap!)

Roll the dice. Shut the season down completely Gratis, Bow, & Gun, except for youth tags. See if the herd can be increased slightly. And yes before everyone jumps my shit, I am well aware of if a harsh/shitty winter and it could all be for nothing.

AND MAKE SURE WE RIP OUT SOME MORE TREE ROWS AND PLOW UP SOME MORE LAND SO THERE IS NO HABITAT WHAT SO EVER !

Montana is also restricting nonresident upland hunters, the first 10 days of grouse and the first 10 days of pheasant block mgt can't be hunted by NR.
if ND game and fish need more money they could charge for their gratis deer tags.

Likely wouldn't be beneficial unless around 3 years no licenses it takes time for animals to grow. Some just think its a quick fix put life takes years to establish imo!

Deer on 4 tightly posted sections of the only land with habitat hardly counts as a butt load of deer in the unit.
Yea haha no that's gay deer are pushed onto posted and so yea they love but dosnt correlate well to most open grounds to average people!

Our Game and Fish rely so heavy on nonresident dollars that it will never change. Plus the fact that our old ass legislatures all have prior motives, crappy ideas, and no sense of what is actually happening to our hunting heritage. They basically eliminated waterfowl hunting to residents in order to appease the 20 something year old white sunglasses, stickers in the back window, video taping guys from MN. Bow hunting is a shit show. And now the same is happening with upland. These guys come for a full week and expect to hunt and kill everyday. Residents go out for an hour or 2 on weekends and then actually have a life to live . There has been no break for the wildlife or the landowners getting constantly called for access from the NR group and game and fish sees no problem with this as long as they meet their budget…Our state has so many dollars, good land, good people, and good landowners, that it could be so much better.. especially for us poor saps that live and work here everyday. Hopefully things will change back closer to what it was 20 years ago

I have a friend and excoworker that grew up in the Page area. He said the samething. Very few deer and they have lots of land to hunt. Couldn't even fill his son Doe tag in the area.

Tag and critter availability seems to be declining in most places. Land availability is also declining (no slight to landowners from me either). Demand on public land is ever increasing. Prices for tags and licenses are going up. The NR keep pushing harder and harder in each state. It is overall just a sad state of affairs. I’ve been hunting for 30 years and see no way it goes back to how it was. Hunting is purely recreational for most. The states snd many landowners see recreation as revenue. Just not going to end well.

I applaud MT for putting their wildlife and residents first.
