My kids can do whatever they want, but some coaches are not instilling the kind of character and lessons I want them to learn. I have seen my fair share of youth coaches and some of it is shameful. I probably learned more from being on losing teams with great role model coaches than on winning teams with poor roel model coaches. I also don’t need to relive my life through coaching or pushing my kids through the same sports I played.

we have lost way more than won hell i think the first two years we won 2 games but all that time we put in on dribbling and simple things are really starting to pay off. i didnt even really want to coach but the other guy that does it asked for some help and it just happened Only thing i told my kid is play or dont its his choice but if he starts there is no quitting half way through the season.

Kurt:
One thing one learns as a teacher that John's parents are your boss as is the whole community and there is a concern just what John's parents have in control over your job and your future.
Hell when I taught in a small school as a teacher one did not even go the local bar but had to go out of town. Yes it changed.

And one of my greatest time in sport is when my son played club hockey up in Canada with all of us working together, parents, coaches and kids. Trips and overnight each weekend, around 40-50 games a season. Getting together at the hotel as a group, getting kick out of the games (hey I never said anything it was the coach).
And then at night when the coach stated to the kids you can only have 3-4 beers tonight as we play tomorrow. And certain parents bought the beer and in Canada it was always bud and half the kids drank. Ah, great times. db

One more point I'd add is that many youth coaches are great. But many are out for the win only. Winning is a goal in youth sports but not the focus. Focus should be development. We want to win and you want to teach them to be competitive but at young ages development of skill is the most important. Heck, more often than not you see those "stud" 6th grade teams end up being average at best when in HS. If they that happens its because of too much focus on the win when younger, not enough challenge and not enough development. Too much pigeon hole-ing.
Just because a kid is 5'8 in 5th grade he is put at Center all year. Then he ends up topping out at 5'11 and now won't make the team because he has no guard skills in HS. Same with football etc. Good youth.. 3-9th grade coaches DEVELOP all positions -all kids. It's the HS coach's job to wean out and push for winning.

My kids had a softball coach for the summer a few year ago. Had two teams with one early high school and the other juniors and seniors. they did compete with each other.
However, during the year every kid played every position out there including pitcher (slow) at practice and games. Again outside the school so a lot of games. And every kid play about equal and in different spots in the batting order.

The older team won state that fall and when on to national. If I remember won a game or two there but in the end lost out. My kids love it and today play softball as adults. And due I feel to one of the coaches my one daughter can hit homeruns over the fence now and then and it is not because she is big. In all my years I only hit one and that was in the ballpark hit with a strong wind behind me. Every time I went up the outfield would move in. Does wonders for one when they do that. db
